Magura rim brakes not the problem for touring people are strangely keen to portray them as - do a search on this forum to see the various pro/anti arguments rehearsed, some by me! I'd be more worried about the derailleur drivetrain personally.

Have read the debate.

It's my opinion.

I have some HS 11s.

As I said, despite their many qualities I wouldn't use them on a tourer.

My opinion.

Hope this isn't considered a hijack.

I have a mk 1 Thorn Nomad frame and forks for 26" wheels (black) for sale, it's in next to perfect condition. It's one of the UK built models fillet brazed in Bridgewater before they outsourced to taiwan. Comes complete with fitted headset, it's also designed for flat bars (longer top tube). This is a superb frame and I'll sell it for 1/2 price if interested PM me and I'll give you full details and dimensions.
These are far superior frames to most of the recent tig welded offerings from most makers, this one is built in Reynold 725 with 531 forks.

A simple matter of swopping existing compnents around and renewing what doesn't work.

Nice bike but 10 speed and hydraulic brakes. Nice brakes but I wouldn't use them on a bike I intended to do serious touring on.

Why not?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, one or two look promising.

I've been read a blog by Tom Allen and he's put an article together about cheap touring bikes. In the article he reviews a bike he rides himself and it looks, apart from the bars, a contender. the company is 'Adventure Outdoor. co' . this is the link to the bike

https://www.google.fr/search?q=genesis+ ... e&ie=UTF-8

I wonder if these people have ceased trading as I can't find a way of contacting them, shame as it's a really good price. Does anyone know anything about the bikes or the company?

Off the top of my head, 525 sourced from UK and 520 from Far East, so very little if any difference.

I've seen that before. Review here:

Can't help on availability I'm afraid.

Ah, I can - it's a Madison brand, so speak to them.

Just had a look round and there seems to be a trend towards 700c even on cheap bikes now. 26" seems to be the unwanted option.
Will this be the demise of 26" decent tyres as the move towards larger wheels evolves?
I'm sure there's enough tyres available for many years even if they stop now.
I don't tour in far flung places, but when I do tour I prefer 26" wheels, lower gearing, stronger wheels and the bike's lower.....I'm not tall.

Magura's HS's used to be pretty solid, but continuous 'improvements' have made them much less desirable. Plastic bleedscrews, nasty Torxscrews with proprietairy threadforms, plastic adjusters & plastic covers are not helpfull when you're stranded in a far away place without parts, while the rusty brakeboosters and brittle castings remain unchanged

I have a bikebuddy on the underside of my 26 inch exped bike with a large Trangia fuel bottle strapped into it,

Last time I checked I seem to remember that this was more of a problem on my 700 wheel bikes. Two have a bottle mount there but don't think I could get a one litre bottle in there.
