We have decided to take a bus or train to Portsmouth and have already booked an Airbnb!
I started looking into the cost of the ferry to Cherbourg. Is there a significant price difference by buying the tickets well nin advance? I seem to see the cost of L50 person. Does that sound about right?
Thanks!

Re: Portsmouth - Cherbourg Ferry Tickets : price check
More to the point, there is a significant chance of not being able to book if the travel dates are popular. They allow only a certain number of pedal cycles per crossing. I booked this time last year for crossings in August and had to change my preferred port of arrival because I simply could not book a bike on that day.

I take you are using Brittany Ferries ?
They are doing a day trip offer from Portsmouth to Cherbourg valid up to 18th July of £31 each with bicycle. Obviously you don't need to return, its cheaper than the standard fare.

That aside I've never noticed a massive price difference booking last minute, a month in advance or simply turning up on the day.

As I checked it appears that is the only ferry option. We are traveling mid August so we will miss that deal!

I doubt that you would be able to transport your bike by bus or coach. The train should be OK, but sometimes there can be issues with taking a (non compact folding) bike on the train, e.g. not on journeys into London during peak commuting hours from stations close to London and not on replacement bus services laid on when part of a rail line is closed for engineering works (although that's usually only at weekends).
There are others on this forum who will be far more conversant than me with taking bikes on trains, so I would recommend that you post another thread asking for help on that point. If you give the date and estimated time of landing for your flight at Heathrow, that will probably help.
That said, as of today it's not yet possible to book trains any later than the 2nd of August according to https://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/farefinder/search, so it might be best to wait a couple of weeks before posting a new thread, i.e. wait until the date you will be travelling becomes available for booking on the rail website.

National Express apparently will work.

Look at the Ts&Cs for offers - if you don't use the "complete offer" they surcharge you to the standard one-way walk-up fare . .. they weren't born yesterday.
