I’m looking into a possible cycle tour from Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk, along the canal. In the past, I have visited the Falkirk Wheel and am aware of the good riding surface alongside the canal at that point. However, I was wondering if it is tarmac all the way and suitable for road bikes.
There is another option for us to continue on from Edinburgh to Dunbar and Berwick on Tweed so any advice about Route 76 would be helpful too.

Re: Glasgow to Edinburgh along the canal
Betweem Glasgow and Falkirk the surface is sealed and would be fine on a road bike, though maybe a bit rough in places if you have very narrow tres. I believe it is still a bit muddy and overgrown in places on the Union canal - I haven't been beyond Falkirk myself.
Five years ago I did some of route 76 - the path between Haddington and Longniddy was quite rough in places, with lots of gravel. It may be better now, though.
