Some interesting short holiday ideas there - but I wouldn't describe most of them as "long distance". When we tour I don't feel I have gotten into it until we have done over a thousand kilometres. The Loire and Passau - Vienna are both small sections of the same route, the EV6.

One persons long is another's short! I would generally agree that 1000km would make a route long but some really excellent routes don't make that. Often it's the old trade routes and the ilk which make the classics rather than some nominal, made up route along a river or for example the Bryson - doesn't mean they aren't nice journeys but maybe not classic.

The classic long distance routes in Europe would, I think be
    the Rhein
    North Sea coast
    Maybe LEJOG

Whilst others of note might be
    The Romantic Road
    Way of St James
    The Danube

There are so many possibilities following coastlines, rivers, mountain ranges, crossing countries etc - just where do you start?

They have really focused on outdoor holidays recently. I view it as positive. I realise it's no longer as niche as it once was and I find some of the routes a bit overused but it's no difficulty at all to go somewhere different if you want and giving people access into the sport is good. Some nice choices, others aren't for me but that's fine.

Ps went to trial a thorn nomad today for my transam with off road bits next year!

They are long distance for 99.9% of the population I guess.

We really are a minority. To be fair after 1000Km I start thinking about home.

Interesting to read about EV2 to Berlin - something I might consider.

I'd love to be able to take the time off to do 1000 km! At the moment the most I seem to manage is 8 days and about half that. Thanks for posting that article - very tempting!
