Does anyone know whether such a trip as this is still feasible given the terrorise activity on parts of the route,
Would one need visas for all countries en route before setting out from the U.K.,.?
Any suggestions as to type of bike, equipment etc,
Has anyone experience of such an undertaking and how long it might take for an average middle aged cyclist,

just reading a fellas journal through turkey to uzbekistan and he has a few incidents regards visas and how he sometimes had to wait a day as he was ahead of himself. there's an interesting part where his fancy hope hub had a bearing failure then the replacement was impounded at customs.

Yes people are still doing it.. but some things are iffy and some things you get an 'escort'. On a bicyle you will probably be transported through certain areas.

It is possible and plenty of people do it. Some would say its almost become a cycle highway on some stretches.

You have to plan a route where you will be allowed to cycle, eg Iran won't let solo Brits; Burma is a no at the moment, etc. You also have to plan a route that you want to cycle. With bits of water in the way, you can't cycle all the way so will need to compromise.

Personally, I would pick a route that I want to cycle (ie countries that interest me) and be prepared to fly between the inaccessible bits, but this would not suit the purists.

Visas are a problem and normally have to be got on the way as they are time limited.

Bike choice depends on lots of things, often mainly your budget.

One could easily write a book on this to give all information, so to answer it in a single post is impossible, other than to say, yes it is possible (apart from the water bits). If you are really interested in doing this, you will need to do lots of research - or head off completely unprepared which may be more interesting.

You don't have to go through Europe, Middle East, Asia, you could go the other way i.e west. It would be so much easier, especially if you took it at the narrowest point. Cycling across Panama would be a doddle, you could probably do it in a day.
