This is often asked, so a good search of all the old posts on here may help.

How much over 100 days do you want and where are you going? Also, age is often critical.

I have Insureandgo annual policy which is good for 90 days, which is nearly 100. If you are not far from home (ie Europe) then a quick flight home could be an option. On their website they say they do bespoke policies. so you could contact them.

I'm sure others will come forward with suggestions, but please date your experiences - these things change very frequently.

Sports cover direct is pricey but comprehensive. Their blog covers cycle touring, bike packing and cycle events. The front page doesn't give you the right quote starting point for >90 days but this link should. I used them for several years when I did a lot of sports and I'm planning to use them for my transam next summer.

The duration is open ended. My daughter is heading to Istanbul then East.. basically she stops when she runs out of money and is hoping to last at least a year. After Istanbul she is hoping to follow the silk road..
Thank you for the input so far.

Depending on your curcumstances, also consider your own house & contents insurance. Most policies I’ve had put a limit on the number of days the property can be unoccupied. My current policy is 60 days, but other policies I’ve had have been down at 30 days.

I’ve recently had to extend the cover to allow longer than 60 days and it took ages and ages on the phone, had to be refered to their underwriters and eventually they charged me a ludicrous amount for a short extension (short because my policy renewal comes part way through when I wanted unoccupied cover and they regarded that as “resetting the clock”). They also put additional terms on the policy for the increased unoccupied time.

I believe my policyndoes not go void if unoccupied beyond the policy limits, just that certain aspecs of the cover are no longer covered (but I can’t remember which bits of cover are lost).

One important thing to note is that the insurance must cover the activity you are doing. Many policies allow cycling, but if you read the small print they exclude any activity done as the sole purpose of the trip.

Here is a link to the Insureandgo backpacker policy available for up to 18 months and says that it includes 50 adventurous sports.Cycle touring is probably one as they include it on my annual policy. https://www.insureandgo.com/travel-insu ... -insurance.

MrsHJ - that Sports Cover Direct seems good as it covers up to age of 75, which is unusual. I don't think it is that expensive (although maybe it is for US).

You might want to look at "backpacker" insurance policies as these are aimed at longer trips. They used to be aimed at students but less so now and they they don't seem to have low age limits any more.

You would want to make sure that cycle touring is covered as a non-incidental activity (ie it's the main activity of the trip not something done on a whim one day) also be wary of any potential weasel clauses that might get them out of a big claim on the grounds of safety equipment - (you weren't wearing a helmet when you broke your leg? Sorry you're not covered.)

Other insurers are available, but I usually end up with I&G as they don't seem to have a complete hatred of cyclists, although their understanding of hypertension treatment leaves a lot to be desired.

It gives me more confidence as cycle touring and all other group one activities (which includes mountain biking) are included so if I come off the road on a gravel path I'm covered and as it's a sports specific insurance it is aimed at people doing a sport as the main purpose of their trip. I don't think they require a helmet as they are sports specialists but definitely worth checking the small print. It is fairly ouchie for the USA 100 day trip but I'm guessing that's due to the bonkers pricing of medical help in the USA.ill check alternatives before I commit. I'm just trying to find the small print now and the front page of the policy is a photo of a cycle tourer. Their claims page is quite amusing-definitely medical assistance focused! https://www.sportscoverdirect.com/claims-case-studies/
