Re: Parish Churches
Off in the car to Liskeard tomorrow morning and parking up whilst I ride away and get some more parish churches done.
15miles each way, so that'll save me a 30mile boring ride on the A390.
Off south out of the town to get in order (anticlockwise):
St Keyne
Herodsfoot
Lanreath
Pelynt
Talland
Looe St Martin
Morval
Duloe
Menheniot
and finishing off with Liskeard.
34miles with maybe 3,600ft of ascent.

Re: Parish Churches
Still not up to a cycle tour, so my October trip to Cornwall will be buy car with the occasional Brompton trip.... and a lot of these churches are on my guide list
I have a week to get round, which sounds easy, but my plan is about 70 miles a day so that I don't overdo the hip

Re: Parish Churches
Went to a church service on Sunday, but left after five minutes, it was so uninspiring and the preacher who sat near me mumbled while singing
Maybe one should visit churches alone, maybe with the poems of Larkin or Betjeman to recite
Or just take time to really do nothing, let the head empty
..
Seen some books with lists of soldiers who died in ww1+2, in the Marble Church at Bodelwyddan there was some info about Canadian soldiers who survived ww1, they were in a camp waiting to go home when an epidemic broke out and many died from fever, -99

Re: Parish Churches
Home, and I'm shattered.
One of the toughest rides maybe ever, and I'm not getting any younger!
34.7miles and 4,127ft of ascent. That's 119ft per mile, but most of those ascents were steep as well as long.

Re: Parish Churches
Sorry.
I missed out Pelynt from my graph.
Ten parish churches done today.

Re: Parish Churches
Another six parish churches done today.
Drove to Lostwithiel and parked in the free carpark.
Cycled 25miles and 3232ft of ascent, making close on 120ft per mile.
Why are churches in Cornwall at the top or the bottom of steep hills?

Aren't most places in Cornwall at the top or bottom of steep hills?

Cos its very hard to stop halfway down a hill and very hard to start again going up so nearly everything is at the top or bottom including Chez Mick
Getting quite scared of Cornwall

Re: Parish Churches
I thought the same applied to Sutrans routes.
If it is unclear which way to go, then choose the option that goes up a hill and you won't be far wrong

Systrans routes typically take the longest route between two points

Re: Parish Churches
At the risk of possible repetition, have The Commonwealth War Graves: Individual Gravestones been catalogued? They are our first point of call when visiting any church whether rural or urban.
Re: Parish Churches
I don't know, but most of the parish churches I've been to have the CWG sign on the gate.carlislemike wrote:At the risk of possible repetition, have The Commonwealth War Graves: Individual Gravestones been catalogued?

Re: Parish Churches
Done only three today.
Drove to Dobwalls and parked up on the roadside.
St Neot, Warleggan, and Braddoc.
18.4 miles but with 2507ft of ascent.
That's 136.25ft per mile.
Damned hard work!
