The 35 size in this poll includes the traditional 37s (1⅜"). There are some tyres sold as x32 which are actually ISO 28 width (take a bow, Schwalbe!) so who knows which option they voted for. Any conclusions from the poll are going to be a bit muddy at best due to range overlaps and unequal range widths.
MJR, mostly pedalling 3-speed roadsters. KL+West Norfolk BUG incl social easy rides http://www.klwnbug.co.uk All the above is CC-By-SA and no other implied copyright license to Cycle magazine.

First of all it is a pity that the categories are a shambles. The divisions are arbitrary and confusing and don't follow what's going on in the bike industry. 28" larger than 50mm? That will be sold as a 29'er ie ' other size' etc. My 27.5 has officlally a 26" wheel etc
That being said, a wider tyre has more load bearing capacity and is better suited to rougher roads. So we now see that tyre width is growing again, after half a century af slow decrease. Two reasons probably, smooth roads are taken over by motor traffic, and with GPS you can find the small rural roads more easily. What's optimum very much depends on how you ride and where you ride. What tyres fit will also depend on when your bike was made

Only if everyone is a pedant!
It wasn't meant to be scientific, just a quick snap of current tyre width choice
Convention? what's that then? Airnimal Chameleon touring, Orbit Pro hack, Orbit Photon audax, Focus Mares AX tour, Peugeot Carbon sportive, Owen Blower vintage race - all running Tulio's finest!

I was surprised that it is mainly 28 mm or less. I expected more of a solid 32 - 35 mm. I'm presuming that we're talking about lightly loaded overnight touring, not day rides: if by touring, people understood unloaded day rides then the results might be confused.
28/32 fully loadeed for me. I'm 97-100kg, toured light circa 10-12kg load but around 85kg weight on 23mm (Michelin select) and wasn't any problem, 50mph descents just fine in fact As you get older I think you prefer comfort over speed so select ever wider tyres.
