Been past a few times, thought i'd have a look today. I've no idea on the history (no on site information) but the arch has Norman elements and the tower includes medieval features.

The tower and the arch are separate. Not had a chance to research it yet.

One of my regrets is the more complicated access

I understand the security requirements, but there was always a little note that told you were you could get the key.

£0 years ago they were all open and accessible during daylight.

I have been an unexpected guest at a funeral!

I had opened the door and been ushered in and sat down. They were so polite and helpful I did not have the heart to tell them I was visiting the church.

He was also an ex-serviceman and there were few mourners so I stayed. In the end, I was thanked for my attendance and declined a visit to join them in the pub.

A fair few disused churches in suffolk.

Only about 6 miles from the outstanding church at Greenstead near Ongar (mentioned by LinusR above) is Magdalen Laver. On the list of Rectors inside the church is William Webb Ellis who is said to have originated Rugby Football and gives his name to the Rugby World Cup.

A group here for Sunday service watched a strange ship drop anchor from the heavens, which became entangled around a gravestone. One of the crew jumped overboard and headed towards the anchor, moving as if swimming. Witnesses grabbed the stranger as he reached the ground; he struggled briefly before drowning, even though on dry land. The remaining crew in the ship severed the rope of the anchor and sailed away; the strange artefact was melted down and used to make the hinges on the local church doors.

I don't believe a word of it.

Harvest festival is a good time to go to church, I know one church that does a service for animals too, all beasts that can pass through the door (eye of the needle?) are welcome

The roof's still mostly original too, but there's a suspended ceiling at present so you can't see the structure of it.

There's a case with a couple of civil war cavalry banners in, one from each side (the white one is Royalist).

Unfortunately you need to find a man with a key to get a proper look at them (we were lucky - he came in whilst we were looking round).

My father was an organist and loved Church Organs

I always remember him trying to get permission at church to play theirs

He would then play some classic music like "Dambusters" to test out the organ

Amazing sounds

Plus One for organs, plusminus for organ music!
Some of it is so heavy and boring, not sure if it pleases the Lord
And some is stirring, comic, colourful, the organists use their feet too

Luck also plays a part.

I was lucky enough to access the Charnel house at St Brides and the chained library at Wimborne Minster

Sounds about as plausible as the rest of the fantasy surrounding religion
