Wales at Easter

Post by griggsy »

Looking at spending a few days going south to north through Wales. Probably starting in Cardiff and heading to Brecon. Trying to identify some off road routes suitable for a loaded gravel bike from there up to Elan Valley, lots of poss8bilities on the map but need something passable in April and not too technical. Any thoughts? Also looking for any bothy/bunkhouse and pub recommendations.

There is a Facebook Group called "Bike & Bivi". Might be worth posting the question on there

The Taff Trail from Cardiff to Brecon is mostly off-road, though old railway/canal paths rather than anything bumpier. After Pontsticill reservoir, you could potentially carry on due north via the Neuadd reservoirs and the old (unsurfaced) pass, then straight down to Brecon from there. Amazing track, though you'd miss out on the lovely pubs in Talybont and Pencelli!

Once you get to the Elan Valley, the track due west from there to Teifi Pools and Ffair Rhos is unmissable.

Ok, so you would take the track alongside Claerwen rather than NCN81 north up past the 3 reservoirs? That would take me close to Claerddu bothy which would be fine. Just so much choice, don’t want to miss out!
