Hi All,
I am planning a long weekend cycle holiday with a group at Thurlby YHA in Lincs and would like recommendations on:
a good route from peterborough train station to Thurlby
CTC friendly cafes between Thurlby and Rutland water
good routes up towards Boston from Thurlby
Looking forward to your advice!
Richard
Peterborough, Lincolnshire and Rutland routes and tea shops
Get The Map!
From the train station ask for directions to the tourist information centre (in the cathedral grounds) - about 0.5 miles from station. Pick up the Green Wheel Map (£2) which is very easy to follow. It details bike shops as well as some ale houses.
The actual wheel is a circular 45'ish mile route and isn't a bad ride. If you are a geocacher there are loads of 'caches' along the way....8 of which are mine!
Please come back to me if you are looking for routes as I have a few vaious ones - just let me know the distance required

Find your way to Helpston using roads shown on green wheel map and then follow this route to Thurlby.

Thurlby to Boston Take A15 north through Bourne turn off onto b1177 about 3 miles north of bourne, turn right onto B1397 in Dowsby village , get onto B1397(old A16) in Gosberton and this goes all the way to Boston. The route is largely traffic free though the A15 can be busy at going to work and coming home times.
Don't know anything about cafes - am a pub man myself.

Suggest you do the last part of Pete75's route rather than the direct South/North first bit then link up to Thurlby. That first bit (AKA King Street) isn't very interesting and you can get quite a bit of traffic on it. How long a ride do you want from Pbog to Thurlby?
Re: Peterborough, Lincolnshire and Rutland routes and tea sh
On the contrary King Street dates back to Roman times and is much more interesting than most more modern roads, Look at this if you don't believe me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Street_(Roman_road)

Oh I believe you Pete75, It's just I find it a bit dull - riding it most weekends.....
I prefer the wiggly, less busy alternatives.

Maybe you find it dull cos you ride it a lot!
Perhaps they could turn right at West Deeping then Tallington, Barholm, Braceborough, Wilsthorpe, Obthorpe, Thurlby.
Re: Peterborough, Lincolnshire and Rutland routes and tea sh
That'd be the route I'd go for. It's a bit more twisty/turny and even has a couple of mini hills. OP, don't get too excited, we're on the edge of the Fens here but there are some nice gradients out towards Rutland with the local 'beast'; Harringworth Hill not to be missed if that's your bag.
Considering how flat it is, I sometimes manage 800m - 1000m of climbing on a long run starting not far from where Pete75 is clearly starting from.
