Openfietsmap - map data updates

Post by Sweep »

I am a great fan of openfietsmap - it's drawn from open steeet maps (OSM)

I use it in my Garmin Etrex20.

All fine and dandy.

It usually gets updated about once a year and I had assumed that any downloads between update dates were downloading the same map data.

So despite all those helpful eager beaver folk generously updating OSM 24/7, you could have a one year old map.

Didn't bother me that much, especially in the densely mapped areas I usually ride.

But checking to see if there was an update yet, I went to:

http://www.openfietsmap.nl/news?offset=40

and find this text:

In this section you can see which map version is updated. Only important improvements or changing in the style are mentioned, map details not, because Openstreetmap is constantly changing and growing.

Does this mean that the maps you download are constantly changing even if they have the same release date?

My take is that the release notes don't mention run-of-the-mill map changes, only important/significant ones. Doesn't mean that the base maps are getting updated regularly though

http://ftp.nluug.nl/maps/openfietsmap/ suggests some have been updated this month.

I'd be surprised if the updates were that infrequent. This page http://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/worldwide suggests updates to the lite version are monthly.

There's an easy way to find out. Find something local to you that's missing/incorrect, register to edit then correct it, then see how long it takes to turn up in the .img file.

I did always mean to contribute to the mapping cotswold, particularly in an area I used to cycle a lot that was very undermapped, but am afraid that I couldn't figure out how to do it.

In the UK, I can live with yearly updates I think, though that statement on the page still puzzles me.

Was tempted to email for clarification but I don't know how good the chap's english is and didn't want to trouble him.

On past form an "annual" update should be available soon.

Perhaps someone could post on this thread if one turns up.

Hi,
The Europe map is only updated once a year. I'm planning to update it soon, this month.
That will include the UK, brexit or no brexit

Thanks for the reply wizard and for clarifying.

I doubt brexit will move any geographic features.

Look forward to the update, I had the idea something was pending about this time of year.

just noticed your blog and pics as well - will check out later.

I'm new to this thread so could anyone tell me the advantageous of this system over RidewithGPS - which I use all the time. Is it mainly in the UK and Europe that it comes into its own?

Openfietsmap are in the first place maps for Garmin gps devices.
You can also load it into Garmin's map software Basecamp for pc or Mac, to do similar things that ridewithgps can do, but ridewithgps is more versatile.
I prefer it myself too, tbh. On the other hand, you cant use rwgps on garmin gps, only send a route or track not the maps.

Hmm, I prefer cycle travel. The only restriction, it's not worldwide. But I don't mind that.

I’ve used it to download a set of USA maps to my Garmin. It would have cost £160 with Garmin.

Just updated the GB map. Dated 26-3-2019. And definitely has a new road junction that has only appeared very recently.
Also updated Majorca as the last time I did that was in 2016. A larger data download now but no idea why ?
(Hope to test it soon :) )

I have 3 maps on my 810.
1 = INTL standard basemap. NR
2 = GB.
3 = Majorca.

I disabled the basemap with the others enabled.
You'll never know if you don't try it.
