Sources of openstreetmap for garmin

Postby Sweep » 7 May 2019, 7:36am

I generally use openfietsmap.

http://www.openfietsmap.nl/

excellent.

But sometimes for speed I just want to selectively download a small area.

Used to use this:

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

but seems to be down at the moment.

Can anyone suggest other sources?

A list of OSM Garmin maps...https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM ... n/Download

I have downloaded from http://alternativaslibres.org/en/downloads.php before, a different style of map.

So I picked 1 country, Estonia, and it arrived via email quite quickly. But I seemed to be having a challenge. I downloaded the file and had the micro SD card installed in the computer. I downloaded the map file to the SD card and then I put it in my Garmin. But when I look on the "Maps File",on the Garmin it is not there. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong. My wife thinks the file needs to be unzipped?

Yes, you need to unzip it first. The file name is gmapsupp.img but if you have another map with that name already, you can rename it to whatever.img (unless your unit is very old, those units can only read one map named 'gmapsupp.img').
See this tutorial for further instructions https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/dow ... 00810.html

We think the problem might be the available space on the computer is not allowing it to uncompress.

Estonia shouldn't be a very large file, as such things go.

If what you downloaded is called "something.img", it's not zipped.
If it's called "something.zip", it's zipped, and right-click --> Extract all should put the contents (a "something.img" file) where you tell it (a new folder with the same name as the zip file by default).
If it's called "something.gz", something.7z", "something.tar" or some such, you'll probably need a program to uncompress it. 7-Zip is quite good, and free.

Once you've got a "something.img" file, it has to go into a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card.
If there isn't a Garmin folder, create it.

I may be wrong but as I can remember you have to have the SD card in the garmin unit
And download the map via a USB connection to the SD card via the garmin unit.
As I said I may be wrong ?
