Brittany ...maps advice please, Voies vertes etc

Post by SteppenwolfSM5 »

Hello folks, we are planning a cycle jaunt to Brittany shortly , I have the Red Dog guide to the Voies Vertes and have seen lots of onlien maps of the cycle network in Brittany. BUT I would like if possible to get hold of a paper map of the Voies vertes, ideally a bit like the nice online map produced by Brittany Tourism (see https://www.freewheelingfrance.com/wher ... -ways.html). Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a paper version? Thanks, Rob

Have you seen IGN sheet 924? At 1:1,000,000 it covers the whole of France, so the scale is quite small but okay for planning purposes.

Better to buy maps over there, more choice, better prices, up-to-date, just take a bit of time in a bookshop

There's an online map shop called Stanfords. They have all the French maps you could need. I think they also have an actual shop you can ring for advice.

They do, near Covent Garden. They also do talks by Authors of various route guides. Went to an entertaining one on cycling the Camino de Santiago.

They have a shop in Bristol as well.

You can quite often get decent free cycling maps at Tourist Information centres in France.

I was in France in February and picked up a decent map from tourist info for free that covered Brittany. I was riding the Velodysee and did the whole thing with free regional and city maps. They had sufficient detail for my needs.

You should be able to pick up a very similar map at the first tourist office. Otherwise the sections of the V6 and Canal Nantes-Brest are available as very very detailed (and lovely) maps from tourist offices in Cotes-D'Armor - I have scans of most available if you want some sections. Also feel free to crib the map off the route on our site - it follows the V6/ V3 and Canal to make a lovely loop and using the google map I've drawn you can download a .gpx file as well... https://www.bretonbikes.com/hotel-based ... -adventure

The new edition of IGN Maps TOP 100 (1/100.000th scale) contains the voies vertes now. It results from a partnership with af3v Not for Profit in charge of Voies Vertes in France.

I did a blog post about this new edition on my blog.

Thanks to this thread I updated my Michelin 1:200,000 map that was falling apart for a set of the new IGN 1:100,000. These are excellent and much clearer to use, the Voies Vertes on them is very useful. They do take up a lot of room, but on my recent trip to Brittany we got away with just maps 114 and 115.

Though even at 1:100,000 a lot of nice cycleable roads/tracks aren't shown, as we discovered one afternoon. My daughter's Garmin showed some non-surfaced roads that headed in our direction and we enjoyed a memorable afternoon through very quiet and beautiful countryside.

A lot of Voies Vertes are boring. Like riding in small Devon lanes, no views, no towns or villages. Avoid IMO

While the trees either side make them a little dull, in the current weather then can be far cooler and pleasanter! Certainly it was a life-saver to do 30 miles of 78 in shade on such routes a few weeks ago when it was 30C all day.
