Teesdale route via Holwick

Post by velorog »

I shall shortly be riding up Teesdale and over to Alston as part of a weekend tour. As an alternative to the B6277 out of Middleton there appears to be a route through Holwick, crossing the Tees by a bridge at Holwick Head House. Does anyone know whether this route is passable and the current state of the bridge.

Still closed I imagine https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-44750485

Edit : looks like it is open and restricted to one person at a time. I’m sure your bike won’t weigh anything :D

The Wynch bridge is at Bowless which is at half the distance to Holwick Head House.
To get to the bridge your planning on crossing go through the yard at Hield House and keep going along the track as the tarmac did stop 2-3 fields before Hield House.
I forget how steep the climb is back up to the road as it's been a few years since I've been that way.

Luck .......... :D

The only problem you will have is that the end of the public road through Hield House farm to the bridge and up to the road is a public footpath and not a bridleway. According to my OS maps and other sources that is. May wish to re-plan.

Yes, I had spotted that the track beyond Hield House was marked as a FP, but Google's satellite view does show a farm road as far as Holwick Head House. I'm quite prepared to walk this if necessary. Beyond Holwick Head House there appears to be a short FP accross a field to the bridge. I am hoping this is open and has not been damaged by any flooding.

Just took a look on a map and I never knew that bridge was there 8) I used to clip sheep at Bridge house, which is a stones throw away from it, back in the 70s.
A search throws up recent pictures of the bridge which looks in good order.
