It's not that easy I remember going downhill on a narrow poorly surfaced
forest track with a steep drop a foot away from my wheels. Must be the only time I've pushed downhill

Flash could always ask one of the riders staying in the caravans to charge his phone

Well, we could bring a 4 plug extension and the guys in the caravans could become the power station for the team ....

And that was that ....Whitehaven to Tynmouth ... 3 great days in good company ..with lovely weather, thousands of feet climbed, tents pitched, and good food consumed.
Shame some had to rush away without saying goodbye ... Modern life eh !!

In the beginning:-



2 and 1/2 days. With 9,000 feet of climbing for first 2 days and all downhill for last 1/2 day.

Somewhere in the middle:-


Cafe not open.


Looking back over the lakes from Hartside. Extremely windy. Set off from Hartside and no joking didn't have to pedal.
44 mph top speed at one point and screaming along for next 5 miles due to following wind.
Going well.

Although this was a Wimps ride it is definitely not for wimps.
Whitehaven to Tynemouth, (west to east), 136 miles overall with over 4000 feet of climbing for each of our first 2 days. (originally projected 9,122 feet overall for the ride but my Garmin showed a total of 10,351 feet. )

I haved looked at my Strava stat's and recorded a 27% section on the climb up to Hartside. I certainly saw a couple of 16 and one 21 percent on my Garmin as I was climbing.
The payback was the next 5 miles, Hartshead to Alston, at an average of 28 mph mainly due to the strong following wind.

A 22.9% appeared on the climb up from Nenthead after the lunch stop. (cafe legs. )
The climb up from Stanhope, a bit later in the day, (Crawly Bankside) was evil and was the only place I actually walked a bit. (tiredness and lactic setting in.) Very glad to see Parkhead Station at the start of Waskerly Way.
Waskerly Way is an easy slope down and hard pack gravel with one or two patches of loose. I ran 25 size tyres and they were a bit skittish in places. N.B. We still had the gale force winds behind so getting a move on.

In consideration I would recommend probably over three nights instead of two. Obviously depends how fit you are and the time at your disposal.

Very glad I have done it and especially as part of the Wimps group.

Whats next for the Wimps?

Gutted that I couldn't ride day 2 but in a way thankful as it was a nasty day! Hartside pass wind was strong and Crawleybank looked horrendous!
Day 1 was very hard...the sheep path to Mungrisdale wasn't nice.....and the final climb in Penrith never-ending.
Day 3 was nice, easy going and fairly flat.
Great to ride with a few guests too.....what plans do we have for 2020?

Horay, I’m home. A cracking 3 days. Thanks to David for supplying the infrastructure, Phil (the driver) for the support, Chris (the cyclist) for driving us back to the start, Chelle for coffee, biscuits, etc and the rest of you for the excellent company...

WIMPS Christmas Party 2019...

Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster 80 mile coastal route over 2 days.
A weekend trip ..
Meet, Friday night, social.
Ride, 40 miles Saturday, social.
Sunday 40 mile ride .... and home ....

30th November - 1st December ...?

It's flat ! ..
But only if we stay on course .......

Or a Bristol Bash ??? ..... Chris and I will do the logistics if someone else will do a route .... in the WIMPS finest tradition of being without height ..... !!!!!!

I’m up for any of those. I can do a route for Bristol. If that’s the chosen one please let me know ideally what mileage you want and the climbing requirements (there’s some lovely hills around here, or not )..

I originally planned to do C2C back in the late 90's in a day Thankfully life intervened.
Opinion now I’ve finally done It is it’s a good ride across the country especially with a tail wind. I’m pretty sure I’m going to do it again probably to coincide with the Keswick railway path reopening. I think 3 days is right but using hostels I’d do
Day 1 > Penrith
Day 2 > Rookhope: I thing ending where we did on day 2 and knowing it was only a further 30 mls downhill, travelling alone, I’d be very tempted to finish it.
Day 3 > I suppose I shouId do Sunderland for the balance but the temptation of Tynemouth is the ease of trains home. The disappointment of Tynemouth is plans for cafe/ signs to mark the end of route have never materialised.
