Google maps distance

Post by Sweep »

Am probably missing something obvious here/am blind.

I would never use google maps for detailed plotting of a route.

But I very often used it for a fast and dirty estimate of cycling distance between two places.

Not for the route as such but for the distance it gave me.

Then I would go to another planner.

Has something changed?

Now it seems to tell me what the cycling time would be.

But doesn't show me a headline distance.

Doubtless if I ploughed through its suggested route I could find the info.

But what happened to the headline distance?

Have I unwisely tinkered with something?

Just looked at my Google maps - Windows, Google Chrome browser and.......

Time and distance shown for car, bike and walking. The latter 2 also showing relief profile.

I don't appear to have anything set in my profiles so maybe you could see if you have anything turned on or off.

Of course if you are looking at S Korea you won't get distances, only public transport options. This is due to some legacy laws that say it is illegal to show certain info on maps. Fortunately not adhered to by the excellent S Korean Naver maps.

Must be going mad.

Am using it on a chromebook at the mo - just checked - and all is well.

Shows distance and time for a choice of routes - and the gradient profile.

Maybe it was something to do with the android tab and its settings?

I have used then for a ready rekoner of time to destination including breaks.

If I were touring I might use them as a typical cycling time.

I'm thinking they are 12mph avg but not sure where I got that figure from!

Just checked it on the android tab.

Yep, was right, no distance shown.

How bonkers is that?

No real user settings at all either that I can see, so like you I don't know what speed that time is based on.

Maybe I've annoyed google and defunctioned it by having location switched off. It usually is.

While I retain my marbles, never understood why a map needs to know where I am.

Will have to use something else for my quick and dirty distance counts.

Time and distance shown on my Nokia 6.1 plus, running Android 9.

It only gives figures for + & - for height, no graph.

Have you gone mad again?

Both the Google Maps app and Google maps on (Chrome) browser show distance as well as time.
I fill in from and to and "get directions".
Top of the screen shows time, below shows distance and time.

7 inch tab (tho to be honest can't see how size would matter) and android 6.

Maybe it's something to do with my chrome security settings, though I had the idea that my firefox focus was more closed down.

Just started up my Nexus 7 Tablet that runs Android 6.

Google maps only show time, no distance, for all modes of transport. Cycling does have a topographical graph.

It seems that as you are running an old version of the operating system you have lost some functionality. Presumably as apps and OS upgrade, old versions still work but less well. V6 last updated summer 2016.

Edit, I think distance was working on the tablet in June when I was in France, so this change must be fairly recent (or maybe my memory is failing me).
