Barrow has excellent train services, fast and frequent
Cheap too if one books now
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

No advance cheap fairs with Northern on that line. Grange to Barrow £7:80 or £12.50 from Lancaster. You can’t book bikes either but my recent experience with Northern Carlisle to Whitehaven suggests they are very relaxed about bikes.

Looking good to me ...
Can all participating WIMPS please confirm and i will finalise the bookings for the Saturday night ... Julie, I and Chris are staying at the very cheap Barrow and Furness Travelodge on the Friday night as previously suggested.

Excellent. Kev, I'm still up for a lift from yours, if that's still OK. Are you going to stay at the Travelodge Friday night, it looks tempting as then we'll all be in the same place in the morning.....

Ladies and Gents,
Having gone through many and varied attempts to get accommodation in the Grange Over Sands (GOS) area for the Saturday night of our ride I seem to have failed.
The Caravan sites at Flookburgh / Haven and GOS are unwilling to let a caravan (s) for a single night and hotel prices in GOS are around the £80 / £100 / person / night.
Which is too much.

Chris and I are still going to do the ride, Julie will be driving and doing tourist stuff while we pedal to Lancaster.
We will be doing the 80 miles as a day ride, stopping at Lancaster Prem Inn / Travelodge Saturday night.
If anyone wants to join us please let me know.

Unless of course you have a secret cottage in GOS.

Sorry folks, but the businesses along the Morecambe Bay Ride do not seem willing to exploit the tourist advantages. Or they make enough in the summer !!!

Businesses in and around the Lake District are all very unwilling to do one night bookings at the weekend.
Their view is that a one nighter takes the room out of service for the three nights of the w/e. They would rather miss a one night booking than run the risk of turning away a 2 or 3 nighter.

Lakes and some areas in Yorks Dales take this view, but they have so much business that they can afford to be choosy. They reckon the "season" starts the weekend before Valentine's Day and finishes the week after New Year!!!

Well the weekend is here .....

Chris and I are off for a ride .......

As the result of a " Series of unfortunate events. " .....

This the route ....

https://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/__data/ ... ls-Map.pdf

We're doing the High Peak Trail and some of the Tissington Trail ....

34 - 57 miles, depending on weather, wind, ice ... but not gradient .... 1/200 is the average uphill struggle ....

We'll catch up with you on STRAVA ..... :D

Cold, Cold, Colder, Coldest ... and Fog.
In the end we rode from Hurdlow to Middleton Top, and back (43.7 km ) ... -3 deg C when we set off, warming to -1 deg C at the finish, although there was a 20 minute period of sunshine on the return.
As for views, ...... fog, fog and more fog ...
So, freezing cold, 0 Vis, no views and sheets of ice on the path ...
Great Ride !!!
We had a coffee and hot chocolate at Middleton top ... which was nice ...

Next big winter ride ... ?
Hornsea to Rotherham 100 mile (Via Hull ) with a night stop (52 miles) at Goole ....
Well, why not ....
