The big mountain on the left is about 300 m high only, Cadair Idris is trying to hide on the right
There is a fantastic steep road to Cregennan from Arthog, and an easy way from Dolgellau

Sticking with the hills theme, this one was allegedly used by sailors for navigation purposes. I'm sceptical of that myself, but is visible over quite a wide area.

I would not be surprised if it was used for navigation.
Old charts often have the note (conspic.) meaning conspicuous, next to prominent trees, buildings or hills etc. which are useful for finding position.
The entrance channel to Ravenglass is defined in the sailing directions as on a line connecting a hut on the beach and a mountain top.

I don't doubt that sailors used distinctive land features to navigate. It's just the position of this hill seems less than useful, which gives you a clue to where it is (or isn't).

The sailing barges of the River Severn were known as "Trows" and hundreds of them once carried goods and raw materials like coal, stone and sand up and down the River Severn between Shrewsbury and Bristol, and along the coasts of Devon, Cornwall and South Wales before the railways took over this role.

Sea going vessels penetrated a lot further up the river than Gloucester.
I can imagine that on a winding river like the Severn a fixed mark would be quite useful to keep a check on progress.
As you meandered along the bends May Hill would move from port to starboard and back again.

Oh no, I won again, just made a wild guess. I do remember May Hill being prominent in the view from Malvern + Herefordshire, but I think it had a different profile from the north
