Right again, pickling cucumbers, the contraption is called a Gurkenflieger, cucumber flier, made of a tractor with two 'wings', it is driven slowly over the field, the workers lie on the wings and put the cucumbers on a conveyor, hard work

Over to you

I guess the hostel is a bit obscure given it closed some time ago and more recently the site has been redeveloped, unless you happen to have stayed there of course.

So here’s a clue so someone else can have a go:

The location is home second largest spire In Britain, after Salisbury.

Assuming St Pauls is not counted as a spire (although technically there is one on top of the it's dome), that would mean Liverpool Cathedral.
Apart from the two current Liverpool YH's, the first of which opened in 1997, there was one located at Mulberry Court, Oxford Street, which both opened and closed in 1984, and so despite it's location could count as obscure due to it's short lifespan. Is that it- Liverpool (Mulberry Court)?

Correct, well done. I believe St Paul’s and Liverpool maybe higher but I was referring to the size of the spire. Back to you Cyril.

I guessed Norwich actually, never been there
This monstrous holy building is bigger, at least higher, even than Salisbury cathedral. It is in a 'double town'

Where is it, how many steps lead to the viewing platform not far from the top?

I reckon between 3 & 4 secs to do it (but I'm not sure why Google was so unaccountably slow, seemed to churn for a while?) :D

There is an unusual modern library nearby, if anyone needs a clue

Having recognised Ulmer Münster, as a result of googling for Norwich spire earlier (which I would have posted but I checked my watch and realised I had other priorities), I'll reveal that the answer is 768 steps.

Assuming that wikipedia is correct, where's this?
