No, not the bottom right of Wales, the top right!
It is of wood, I stayed there, not far from Moel Fammau, the Ladies Mountain
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

I stayed there in 1957 with 2 mates, one of whom was the tallest man in Sheffield at 6'9".I was 6'2"" and found the bunk space between the cabin walls a bit short. He had great difficulty!

Really the reverse of the old quiz questions, as I don't know the answer.

Could anyone (perhaps quiz veterans) identify the place in this image? It is a picture taken by my late father at some time between 1950 and 1963. All the other pictures in the same batch were taken in the Pennines, so I think it is probably in the UK and most likely in Northern England, but I have not been able to locate anywhere with the distinct pattern of spits or training walls and lagoons, apparently at a river mouth. My first thought was Barrow in Furness, but it is not there.

If it not in the UK then it would have to be the French or Belgian Channel coast (as he did not go anywhere else in the years involved) but that looks like a British-pattern steam locomotive standing in the siding.

I suppose erosion or land reclamation might have substantially changed the site over the last 60 to 70 years.

Given the timeline, and the rather odd position of buildings near to water, I wonder if this is taken during the 1953 floods along the north sea coasts of the UK and low countries?
Not that this helps with the location...

I agree. It's very reminiscent of the Britain From Above images taken from planes in the aftermath.

It looks like Barmouth/Abermaw to me.

I think Rotovator has got it spot on. The white building on the beach is now Bath house cafe.

Many thanks, Rotavator, I'm convinced you are right, it is indeed Barmouth/Abermaw seen looking down from Dinas Oleu at high tide. I had not thought of there as I had been assuming a navigable river, probably serving as a port upstream, and as the Mawddach is not navigable I had not looked closely at its mouth.

Navigable by what size of boat?
Abermaw is the starting port for the Three Peaks Race.

The famous viaduct stops sailing boats going any further up stream.

Well-spotted rotavator! Are you a local to the area? We've been on holiday there a few times but not recently. We've enjoyed almost exactly the same view but I'd not have remembered without you cue.

Re the navigability of the estuary, it certainly used to be and Penmaenpool was the port it served. There's some useful info in the Trigger's broom report linked in pwa's recent thread
