OK, a gnomic clue that might particularly appeal to Cyril. The ferry is crossing a river whose headwaters lie in a region noted in children's literature for it's fictitous light railway.

No, this railway appeared only in a book, not on TV, and I don't think Ivor and Jones the Steam had any dealings with gnomes.

No, not in Kent. It is in England.
Are there any fictitious light railways set in Kent?

It is the Kingswear Princess ferry in Dartmouth:

https://www.dartharbour.org/visitors/lo ... n/ferries/

I got it from the Gnome reference - I went there with my nephews and niece when they were really little, and no, I didn't try on one of the hats and sit on a mushroom.

I've run out of pictures, so someone else can have a go (assuming I am right).

There were. The river being crossed by the ferry in the pic. does not rise on Dartmoor.

Further clue. The river is quite short. On a clear day it is possible to stand at it's mouth and see the hills where it's headwaters lie, and where the gnomes were supposed to have built their light railway.
