roughly what sort of max tire sizes are with these bikes, Im totally unfamiliar with them.

I'd recommend a Genesis Vagabond,maximum tyre size is 700 x 2.1inch without guards 2inch(50mm) comfortably with,and all the brazeons and fittings for any type of touring.
IMO Surly riding a reputation and are pricing themselves out of the market.Genesis are indeed the new Surly and have some great well equipped touring bikes in their catalogue.
