Looking for the starred hotel flags on https://cycle.travel is more reliable, hotels named in the route guides even more so, but basically you have to contact hoteliers to check, if you care where your steed sleeps.

This isn't actually a uniquely British problem. I think I've been told by more hotels in the Netherlands things like "well, there's some racks on the street outside" which have meant I booked elsewhere. I don't know whether the cost of taking bikes on trains and fairly cheap OVFiets hire bikes have reduced demand so much that some hotels ignore it.

The widespread rentable hotel lockups (garage boxes) and private garage parking spaces in Germany, France and Belgium, especially those intended for motorcycles with wall or ground anchors, are useful. I think I've only used bicycle-specific garages in hostels not hotels but I may have forgotten one.

I also look at cycle.travel, but also look at reviews on booking.com, etc, where you will often find some comment about bikes being stored. People do mention it in reviews.

All the national tourist authorities accredit subscribing accommodation with their Cyclists Welcome Scheme.

This is what I was thinking about. While some places probably don’t mind you bringing a bike to the room…

I was especially wondering about places along routes like C2C and common LEJOG routes.

This was another new one to me and it's a few steps to reach the details: http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk then select the trail that you want to stop near, open Trail Information, scroll down to the interactive map, then open the filters and pick Cycling Info: Accommodation with secure cycle storage.

It has the feel of being human-edited rather than compiled by searching and filtering, so some of the details are out of date but there's at least a feeling that someone at some point has said "yes, we have secure cycle storage" when asked.

Of course, the weakness is coverage, in that it only shows results near the National Trails and they're mostly MTB and walking routes with far from complete national coverage. They can be viewed on https://mtb.waymarkedtrails.org/#routel ... 05!-0.4133 amongst others, or they're shown in gold on https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=10/5 ... 7&layers=C once you get to zoom level 10 (the first number after map). I don't think they're shown on cycle.travel yet.

Most YHAs have bike sheds with tool kits etc.- may want to contact city hostels direct to double check. and some sheds may not be open due to Covid. Travelodge and Prem Inn claim they are happy to put clean bikes in your room (be ready with todays paper to protect that lovely carpet!
