Hull to Zeebrugge ferry route ends

Postby Syd » 3 Oct 2020, 7:47pm

P&O have had two ferries berthed in the harbour beside me for the past 5 months. One left last week but the other is still there. Thought there was some lights and activity on it last night.

It would be interesting to know if the Hull ferry was loss making before the SARS-CoV-2 virus shut things down or not.

Very sad.
Excuse my ignorance, but if in the north will you now have to head for the channel if you want to cross the water without flying?

Does this affect Hull-Rotterdam?

Otherwise I think that leaves Newcastle to the north of Hull and Harwich to the south.

A quick search is bringing up a service from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

I note in another news story on the same subject that they are reducing the service from Calais too with two boats coming out if service.

One of them, the Pride of Burgundy, is the one still sitting in a dock near me where it has been for months.

From what I can gather:

Hull-Rotterdam continues.

The two Hull-Zeebrugge ships were old and tired and would have had problems with future regulations on polluting the planet. And they had received public subsidy recently, although £7M is tiny compared to what else is going on.

But beyond that the ferry business is going through enormous changes. No-one knows the future UK border arrangements, but the bureaucracy is expanding enormously and a lot of software is being written without a final specification. Kent is building lorry parks and will have a new entry permit scheme. Ireland has opened new routes to France and possibly the Netherlands. Ports in northern France are enlarging. But at least the Foreign Secretary now knows that Dover is a port.

PS: The route that I miss for cycling is Esbjerg.

Yes, the trips from Newcastle were great. Now just to The Netherlands.

Or denial after experiencing the appalling options when arriving there by bike after the overnight crossing?

Surprisingly Dover is only 40 more mile from Hull than Harwich is (260 v 220).

Most people don't realise how far East Harwich is. One sign that always surprises me is that when exiting the A1 onto A14, it says Harwich 100 miles.

This gets in Hull , Halifax and hell. Not the most technically perfect singer but brilliant for this.
