EU VISAs after Brexit

[I well remember going to italy in the early 80s to stay with an italian family for ten days or so.
Conscientious me had read in some official guide that you were supposed to register with the authorities within a couple of days of arrival or something.
So trotted off to the mega carabinieri HQ to find a lot of bemused folk.
They may have taken my details down (can't remember) to humour me before going back to their office gossip.

Reminds me of riding into a small Kansas town. The ACA guide said I was supposed to register with the local police. I mentioned this to a policeman in a cop car who was giving me directions. "Consider yourself registered" he said

Yes US immigration is in a class of its own - mostly, but I also have some really nice experiences.

I've had a few rum immigration officers travelling to the US, but I have to say that Canada is the opposite. They always seem pleased to see a colonial cousin!

Not sure if anyone reading this anymore but I have a question.

Do the EU currently have a central database for recording how long people have been in the EU?

I ask because of news reports of people not being allowed to enter because of no exit stamp some time ago. Hence could (??) have been in the EU a long time.

I've also read that the UK Govt have updated advice for us to check we get a leaving stamp.

I know it will all be sorted once the EU visa thingy goes live but what about now. If no such record, all EU Immigration Officers would need to check every passport for stamps and add up every entry for last 180 days. Could slow down the immigration queues bit.

No, they don't. The new Entry and Exit system goes live next year, which will automatically log dates and flag overstayers.

Currently it's up to you to ensure you have proof, via the exit stamps, but the implementation is basically dependant on which border guard you speak to. EES should standardise that.

As for slowing down the queue, the checks at MUC for financial means, return tickets and accommodation bookings were quite slow anyway. Plenty of time to look at the stamps as you found the relevant emails.

Visit regularly with work. Half the stamps are barely readable!! Some never stamp at all. How they work it out is beyond me..

Do we know anything about applying for an ETIAS (EU visa) once the system goes live?

Can you apply without a trip planned or booked? Just so you have it handy.

What questions will be asked?

I am planning, and hoping for a Cycle trip from the UK to Istanbul next May/June 2022.
Its a mixed picture.
In general you get 90 days in any 180 days to visit the EU as a Tourist.
However some Countries require you to have a separate Visa and are not included in the 90 days,Bulgaria for example.
There are COVID requirements, Tests and/or Negative Tests and Locator forms.
Thanks to Brexit and COVID things are more complex.

... and I recommend checking the validity of passports, some countries have changed how close to expiry is acceptable.
