EU VISAs after Brexit

Post by Navrig »

This thread is intended to be used as a source of good information and experience in relation to VISAs in the EU after the Brexit deals are concluded at the end of 2020.

Where possible I'll try to capture useful links on this top post so feel free to add your thoughts links and experience.

I don't think we will know until after negotiations have finished, which may well extend into the new year for niche issues like this.

I suspect extended trips will be both harder than Leavers think, and easier than Remainers think.

There didn't seem any difficulty before we joined the EEC (which morphed into the EU) - just turn up with passport - sometimes it was stamped.
Obviously the East European states were another story before communism ended although Jugoslavia wasn't a problem.
I don't think we will need a Visa for EU travel.

That was over 40 years ago, things have changed.

It's already stated that visa free travel is only guaranteed for trips under 3 months.

I'm hoping that is over pessimistic and based on our Government's failure to handle their "oven ready" situation (i.e. people need to know something so tell them the worst case scenario). The linked page does state "There may be changes from 1 January 2021. What these are depend on how you’re travelling."

I agree that - who knows - is the current situation. This also applied to EHIC replacement.

Almost all visas and health agreements are reciprocal so it partly depends on how tough a stance the UK take. Plus a bit of vested interest eg a country liking long stay visitors. Then add a desire by EU to maintain consistency across all members. Stir thoroughly and leave to stand.

Let's remember that Visa and health are problems that people coming from Europe will face too. Their Govts may come under pressure to make agreements.

I think a couple of stickies (visa and health in Europe) will be a good idea, but probably not till after January 1st.

The purpose of Brexit, remember, is to "take back control" (of our borders, particularly).

Expecting no visa travel for all circumstances is then probably naive, but I hope I'm wrong.

The UK government has been quite open with business about this. Without a deal that keeps Freedom of Movement:

As a UK citizen you will be eligible for the Schengen Visa Waiver programme. This allows you to be in Schengen for 90 days in any rolling 180 day window. There's a calculator at https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/visa-calculator/

In addition, from 2022 you will need to pre-apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation https://etias.com/

If you're carrying work equipment you may need a carnet - issued by your local chamber of commerce and refundable when you return it (with the 4 relevant customs stamps).

If you want to stay longer, you can apply to an individual country for a longer tourist visa.

Note that's 90 days in a 180 day window, not 3 months, leave, get another 3 months.

You're in favour of freedom of movement? Surprising...

There were lots. They varied by country. Processes were extremely inconsistent... some required going to embassies to queue, and then being told you needed another document.

Good summary. NB the point about separate countries, despite the wording of the Subject.

There might just be some changes before 1/1/2021 but I'd bet against it. And strongly against something like the EHIC system being preserved.
