German radweg Elbe Aller?

Post by birkhead »

Planning a future trip. One ebike plus one touring bike. Travel train to London, Amsterdam, c.Hamburg. Hotel, b&b. 50-60kpd. + sightseeing, art galleries etc.
I wonder about combining the Elbe and the Aller paths. We have previously really enjoyed cycling the EV6 canals + Loire from switzerland to the atlantic. And the Romantic Way + Danube to Vienna and Bratislava, but rather bored by some of the Danube. It sounds as though the lower Elbe may not be very exciting, hence the Aller option.
One essential feature is tarmac paths. It seems hard to find this detail. Tho my ltd skill with deutsch may be the constraint.
General advice welcomed, alternative routes, detail on path condition, facilities in upper Elbe.

Mentions an Aller-Elber Radweg, so it looks like there is a joining cycle path.

The handbuch has distances, sites etc.

The scenery through Saxony is great, but it's still a bit more rundown than Western Germany.

One detour I'd recommend is on to the Mulde Radweg to Jugenheberge Colditz Schloß https://www.jugendherberge.de/en/youth- ... /portrait/

Thanks - that's on my 'list'! Really looking forward to Brompton touring and hostelling in Germany again. Maybe next year?

About the Aller Radweg: die Wege sind vorwiegend asphaltiert, ansonsten mit wassergebundenen Wegedecken versehen. The roads are mostly tarmac, otherwise gravel roads. See here for a description: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wassergebundene_Decke So when it gets wet, there may be a bit of an issue. My experience with German cycle routes is mostly very positive, but by and large they are on the rough side. I would suggest fitting the widest possible tyres, and to avoid slicks.

A wassergebundene Wegdecke is usually rideable even in the wet, but not so fast
Often one may ride on either side of the Elbe
Generally towns in the East are in good condition, often better than in the West, been catching up for 30 years
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

i would suggest getting the Bikeline guide (or similar), all the info you'll ever need.

I've only done a bit of the lower Elbe - Hamburg towards Magdeburg, the surface was anything from really good tarmac to unrideable sand nut this is all marked in the Bikeline guide so no real surprise, just a bit frustrating late on a hot summer afternoon
Convention? what's that then?
