I'd suggest that is a good idea whatever the situation re whoever is operating the site. Ignoring specifics about current challenges and issues, there must always be a degree of risk that any operator might lose interest or have to spend time earning a living or hundreds of possibilities and to have all your efforts beyond your control should anything happen would seem an avoidable risk.

I treat my own web site as much as a diary/personal record as anything else so making sure it isn't subject to vagaries of others is something I ensure - in my case by operating my own web site.

Note: Archive.org (waybackmachine) is something I've found a bit of a "pain" so have actually blocked them from my own site - so if said individual is into blocking others something he may easily do (which means if he takes it all down tomorrow, no independent copies around to recover your stuff through). Issues I had were with un-throttled access causing loading issues. But also, for larger sites, maybe bandwidth from e.g. archive.org might be a consideration leading to blocking.

Sage words. Yes indeed, there was a bit of a purge in the last couple of weeks, and a load of fairly well-known (these things are relative, I know) users - Wayne Estes, Greg Garceau, Andrew Haycraft) got kicked off https://www.cycleblaze.com/forum/128/page/1/ - apparently for clicking "disagree". I think most recovered their journals but some lost data. Certainly in the past Chris Pountney ended up permanently losing his round-the-world epic after his run in with Neil.

You're certainly right that it isn't in the wayback machine, google search cache (any more, obviously) or doesn't seem to be archived anywhere else. Making a backup seems wise at any rate.

OK, I've been in touch with cycleblaze about moving my journals. Thanks everyone for raising this - I would have had no idea otherwise.

(Irrelevant comment) To me it seems somewhat ironic/hypocritical/whatever the word is when site owner stands against e.g. censorship of Trump yet then goes and censors people who disagree with him. So if Trump breaks Facebook rules it's wrong for Facebook them to silence him but if some of his clients disagrees with him it's immediate silencing that client. Maybe shows such attitudes for what they are.

I don't use the site but rings big alarm bells.

Ah, that's handy someone at Cycleblaze can help with moving them across (I don't know know the Cycleblaze people, but it looks like there are quite a few CGOAB journals over there).

I can image it being a pain to extract all the content/pictures etc otherwise, or laborious to do it manually. Interesting I found this, looks like other people are also aware of/trying to solve this problem: http://www.bikejournalbackup.com.

I'd start by using a general purpose ripping program.

I loved the connection with Sylvia Pankhurst.

Clarion already split a few years ago with one sector keeping the socialist connection.

Is this a classic example of the old Victorian song lyric "Turn ‘Erbert’s face to the wall, Mother,
Nevermore mention his name,
For he’s brought disgrace on the family
And bowed down our heads with shame"

Just substitute Keir for Erbert?
