Summer Plans?
Summer Plans?
Hello,
I never realised there was a forum for touring and I am very happy to have found this site!
I am 51 with 2 kids and reluctant travelling wife (except for 5 star hotels in exotic locations), so last year I did the Pennine Way trail when the lockdown was eased in July (my very first touring trip):
https://www.komoot.com/collection/88821 ... ghest-ride
It was absolutely amazing! Can absolutely recommend to anybody who has never done it. It took me 11 days.
I took a roadlite Canyon - which was a beginners mistake . I have since changed to a Canyon Pathlite 4, and am planning further adventures.
Would be interested to find out if anybody is planning any European adventures, particularly in light of Covid. I have the Eurovelo map in front of me, (working from home), and am eyeing up Eurovelo 15, starting from Andermatt. Getting lots of flak from family though - who want me to give abroad a miss this year - so am looking to do the tail end of Eurovelo 12 from Inverness up to the Shetland islands - maybe.
Would be very interested to find out what people are doing?
Best

Re: Summer Plans?
I have 4 kids who aren't interested in riding and a wife who cannot ride due to medical reasons.
I always take my bike on holiday and go out for 4 hours each morning from 6-10am.
Rather like a mini tour. I've done this all over the UK.
Otherwise I get a couple of days max with a mate. We did coast to coast a couple of years ago.
Cheers James

We rode the EV15 from Oberalp to Rotterdam in 2019. Would this be with the children?

Hi Jonathan - no - just with me
Hi James - fantastic - that is a good alternative to overnight stays etc, and I guess doesn't disrupt the family life so much!

Re: Summer Plans?
I've got a planned Limburg adventure to ride Cycling Through Water, Cycling Through Heathland, Cycling Through Trees, then visit the Hovenring and Baarle-Hertog/Nassau on the way back to the Hook of Holland ferry, but that's on hold for now because I can't see France, Belgium and the Netherlands all being fun places to visit at the same time this year.
I have a voucher for one hotel in Brussels, so I may take a short single-country break later in the year and hire a bike.
I've a couple of plans for UK tours but nothing booked yet. Last year, we did the Norfolk coast and rivers route which is now described at https://cycle.travel/route/norfolk - this year, I may go in search of some rail trails.

Hi mjr,
Thanks for the heads up and posting the link on the Norfolk tour. I am in Cambridgeshire so that's easily doable for me.
Have to admit I have no idea about Holland apart from a brief interrail foray in Amsterdam 30 years ago. I just googled Baarle-Hertog/Nassau which came back with a video saying it's the most complicated border town in the world. Sounds like fun!
Yes - it does look like options are limited. I have seen some earlier threads about the April 12th easing of restrictions - but it doesn't look good, as it's data driven and I'm guessing EU countries are behind us in their vaccination schedule at the moment.

Blimey.
Komoot have ripped that off, word-by-word in some cases, from my route guide at https://cycle.travel/route/pennine_cycleway/guide .
I am honestly lost for words.

Decided that I can do without an overseas holiday this year. I'll wait a see if the covid situation improves
in 2022. I'll be long retired by then, so will have plenty of time to plan something special.

Hi De Sisti,
Sounds great! Retirement is some way off for me - but already eyeing up my Eurovelo map in front of me

If you do manage to get the family involved, EV15 is great, especially around Konstanz and up towards Mainz/Köln.
Easily make it in to a family holiday with sailing, vineyards, 2 great cultures, some great historic cities and some great kid friendly resorts on the bank.
A novice learning...

Hi st599_uk,
Thanks for the encouragement. Might be able to get one daughter to come But the other definitely not.
Sure it would be a memorable trip!

Something like this appeals to me for this year when conditions permit

Haven't checked but no reason to doubt you.
I'd make them aware of that/seek recompense and a credit/name and shame.

Re: Summer Plans?
I’m thinking a rerun of EV17 in September which is the rhone route. This time I’ll start closer to Brig and head east, not west at the med. I did it a couple of years ago but an ear infection and vertigo limited my distance and so I’ll miss the chunks I’ve already cycled (I’ll take the train) and fill in the rest which is good as I can get close to the source whereas before I started in Geneva, I have friends at the eastern end too. Just need to see what flights might be available.
