Good old reformation.
The Established Church in England is the Church of England.
RC cathedrals are the new kids on the block (so to speak) .......... as the originals were all made into CofE centuries ago.
Please, someone educate me ........... where is the oldest RC cathedral?
The Plymouth one (only) dates back to the mid 1800s.

Well it is our state religion.
(it also omits synagogues, revered football grounds, and oh, Wales+Scotland!
This is how themes work, you have to narrow down the itinerary in some way.
Maybe the 21 Catholic ones would be a good alternative? I have no idea where most of them are!

The point I was trying to make is that if you are only going to tig them, rather than treat them as a destination in their own right, it doesn't really matter what you pick, so long as you get a network that suits your purpose.
Re: Cathedrals Cycle Route challenge
Boris Johnson might be able to find one of them.
They are, to my eye, less attractive than the good old Anglican ones. The RC Cathedrals are all brick because of their relative modernity.

Been on a school trip to both of the Liverpool ones.
Also did both Coventry cathedrals on another trip. The bombed one, and the new one.

Known locally as Paddy's (Paddies?) Wigwam, used to leak like a sieve.

Re: Cathedrals Cycle Route challenge
Leaks in a roof are not uncommon with some famous buildings. I remember the Sydney opera house had this problem also the Barbican had problems in the early days.
Architects sometimes make great looking buildings that are difficult to make watertight. A solution can usually be found and after initial problems you're left with a memorable building, for good or bad.

Lead thieves don't help.
Re: Cathedrals Cycle Route challenge
Quite a few of the good old Anglican ones are actually good old RC ones, predating the reformation.
Still, nothing on the Kölner Dom.
A novice learning...

Most are pre-Reformation, I imagine. The point is about age and construction rather than denomination, as I wrote earlier. The RC ones, being relatively modern and constructed in brick are, to my eye, less attractive than the old stone ones.
Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder.

I am pretty sure Norwich is stone, Victorian Gothic by George Gilbert Scott Jr — a gift from the notoriously Catholic Dukes of Norfolk — while Clifton (Bristol) is a striking concrete wedge.
