When you say "Southern Ireland" do you mean the Republic of Ireland?

Quite correct!
If there is a Northern Ireland there has to be a Southern Ireland - and maybe it could be called The Republic of Southern Ireland.

Otherwise, it would be as if Scotland broke away and started to call itself: The Republic of Great Britain. :x

There hasn't been a country or state or region called "Southern Ireland" for nearly a hundred years. Southern Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Using the term to describe the current state is offensive to many people.

If there is a northern Ireland there has to be a southern Ireland. The existence of Northern Ireland doesn't mean there is a Southern Ireland.

The island of Ireland (Eire in Irish) consists of two states, Ireland (Eire in Irish) and Northern Ireland, There is no such place as Southern Ireland.

Unfortunately I think the requirement to fill in the Passenger Locator Form

https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/ab900 ... tor-form/

means that my sort of cycle touring - book your accommodation on the day or perhaps a couple of days ahead at most - is not going to be encouraged. Ah well, another time...
