I'm doing a six day charge through France this month [see below]. I've not pre-booked any accommodation, but am mostly aiming for two star hotels. I'm travelling light, with just a rack pack for luggage.
Any thoughts as to a lock that makes for the best compromise between high security and low weight? I'll try not to let the bike out of my sight too often but can't guarantee a secure billet for it every night.
What lock?

What lock?
Motorists' mantra: Cyclists must obey the law and the Highway Code AT ALL TIMES. Unless their doing so would HOLD ME UP.
Re: What lock?
This is always a difficult one to decide. I've been leaning towards the cheap, light , "poundsaver" lock for many of my trips - it's enough to stop the snatch & grab opportunist while I'm in a shop or cafe. But if I had to leave the bike unattended against a lamp-post all night then nothing but my heavy D-lock would do.
Re: What lock?
My machine has never had to sleep out in public when using hotels in France. It has been in laundry rooms, in my room, in the back yard, under the stairs, in the ballroom - all sorts of places. The worst was when I had to leave it outside the front door until 8pm when I could put it in reception.
Even in these places I would often lock it. I use a reasonably robust coil lock which needs the key to lock it as well as unlock it (just in case I forget a key).

Re: What lock?
Useful advice, thank you. Will go for low weight, visible deterrent option [for cafe stops etc] on the basis that the velo will have a secure lodging at night. It will be plastered with 'charidee' posters anyway, so it would be a really evil cochon that would nick it!
