Crawley/London to Amsterdam JULY/AUG?

Postby GrimeRider » 25 Mar 2014, 10:20am

Hello all,

I am thinking of riding to Amsterdam possibly in July or August.

Rough plan is:

- set off from Crawley, West Sussex & reach/stay in Dover 1st day

- 2nd day, reach and stay in Brugge, Belgium

- 3rd day, reach and stay in Antwerp

- 4th day, reach and stay somewhere in hook of Holland

- 5th day - Amsterdam!!

Any ideas/tips on bike friendly places to stay along the way? I have a Garmin Touring device which I will be using but still need to get hold of a decent map & plan the route!

Let me know if anyone is interested in joining me.

A few remarks on the dutch part of this route.
Pro: It is a rather direct route.
Con: It is a rather direct route. :)

If you have a bit more time, take the LF9 NAP-route from the Belgium-Dutch border. This route follows more or less the borderline between above and below sealevel. (This page is only available in Dutch :( )
In Utrecht you can pick up the LF7 Overlandroute to Amsterdam.

And why not visit Baarle Nassau / Baarle Hertog south of Breda.
Take your coffee or lunch in one pub in two countries at the same time.
Peter

Please, excuse my English. I'm Dutch.

The ride from Hoek van Holland to Amsterdam. Take it along the coast all the way to Zandvoort. Great ride, you can pass Scheveningen, Katwijk, Noordwijk with places where to stop for coffee and such. The wind will be on yer back in the PM. The road is nice and wide. Use below route planner to download superior route solutions onto your GPS:

http://en.routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl/

Or the direct route Hoek van Holland - Amsterdam Centraal Station about 50 mile ride. Plenty StayOkay hostels about too.

There is a very popular cycle route planner for Belguim found on Belguim tour thread. Choices, chioces, choices... Perhaps then stick along the coast from Calais - Zeebrugge - Vlissingen - Maasluis canal crossing - HvHolland onwards.

Perhaps try to go the back route to Amsterdam to sample Dutch countryside, beer, frites, windmills and such...

The public transport website may assist if you wish to skip and go by train (bicycles on Dutch trains cost €8.00 and only off peak travel allowed on):

Nice hotel to stay in Antwerp is Scheldesicht. Cycling from Antwerp to Amsterdam have done this several times and several different routes, longest being along the E19 from Antwerp - Breda through to Dordrecht or take the backroad parallel along N263 for some countryside. Shorter will be to head North towards Roosendaal - Moerdijk - Dordrecht. Then direct Amsterdam inland route about 50 miles which is also wicked.

I dont like traipsing from Dordrecht through Rotterdam perhaps as a heads up. YMMV

Bon appetit and party on you will enjoy it!

:D :D :D
