Hi Everyone
Long time lurker,first time poster.......

Planning trip into Death valley (Nov/Dec) and looking at the first night accommodation in Vegas.
(Yes i know there are thousands of places) LOL.
Something not too far from airport and not too many $ would be good, any recommendations appreciated.
Anybody stayed at any of the Vegas campsites?

Stay at one of the huge casino/hotels and take a stroll into others; just for the experience of course.

On a long driving trip in April 2000 I stayed at one of the big ones (Excalibur)with friends. We found it was not substantially more expensive than other hotels we used around Death valley. At that time it was $130. I've just looked at a one night booking for November and it is only $50 - so go for the experience.

Luxor is a laugh, especially the sarcophagus in your room and the canal in the basement. Treasure Island is good the British get sunk saluting every hour and a half. There's a volcano erupting next door at the Mirage and a rainforest (air conditioned of course!). There is jousting at Excaliber. You can take a Gondola ride in Venice. As he said visit every hotel its very entertaining and free. And do push the boat out and stay at one for a night or two.

I've used booking.com for a few hotels eg Saigon, Taipei, etc. They usually have a good selection and show location on map, plus distance from airport, etc. They also have reviews so you can get an impartial (?) comment. I had a look a little while ago at LV, plenty to choose from.

There are others eg expedia.com

If you have never been before it's well worth visiting the strip but if your getting off the plane with your bike then check the distance first and what time you arrive, as it ain't a stone throw away.

Depends what day you arrive as well, Friday and Saturday nights are most expensive as that's when Americans visit. Also if there is any type of conference or show on expect to pay a lot more, if it's a big show/conference book in advance.

Most of the big hotels on the strip have their own website and you can book in advance. When checking in put a 10 or 20 in your passport when handing it over and ask if there are any free upgrades, takes a bit of bottle to do it but can be well worth it if the hotel isn't that busy.

Motel 6 is your best bet, it's close to McCarron Airport and a few hundred yards from the strip. There's a resteraunt next door too. Motel 6 are reasonably priced and rooms are generally pretty good. I've stayed there a couple of times.

I now usually stay at the Excalibur often they do some great deals. Before that was built I stayed downtown at the 4 Queens which can be a better if you don't have a car.

As Galloper said. Motel 6 on Tropicana was cheap & convenient. There is a small store & a adjacent diner.

I used it as the start & end point of a trip to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches & Zion. They kept my bike bag for me as well

I hated Vegas ! Just not my sort of place.

I wouldn't stay in any campsites to be honest in Vegas. There are as you say thousands of places to stay however are you looking for the Vegas experience or just a cheap night before your Death Valley trip?
You can get some very good deals for as little as $30 - $50 on strip hotels and there are plenty of airport hotels to suit your needs.
If you get chance visit the Red Rock area en-route to Death Valley as it is a lovely place to see.

I'm happy to give you further detail if you need as I've recently returned from Vegas having spent 2 1/2 years their.

To "hjd10 " yes it's just for one night then head to Death Valley via Red Rock , stayed in Vegas for 3 nights in the mid-nighties after cycling from Colorado Springs and the contrast between quiet mountains/desert and the brashness of Vegas was "interesting".
