Innsbruck to Munich cyle route

Post by nelson53 »

I'm wanting to cycle from Innsbruck to Munich this summer. Does anyone know where I can get a good route map or guide for easy to moderate cycling.

Thanks

For the German part of your trip, take a look at http://www.bayerninfo.de/bike. Presumably you can follow the River from Innsbruck to Germany which is a well established route.

Bikeline do some excellent bike maps (http://www.esterbauer.co.uk/db_detail.p ... e=RK-BAY17 for example). You can follow the Inn all the way to Germany on a well signposted route that avoids most of the busy stretches of road (look out for the Routemaster bus at Hall IT Maccy D's!)

If you fancy something a little more adventurous there are several routes going north over the mountains into Bavaria - the ADFC site is good, some is in English (http://www.adfc.de/about-us/about-us), i use their maps which you can buy through Amazon.
Convention? what's that then?

We recently did Innsbruck - Worgl on the Inn path.

http://www.tyrol.com/inn-river-cycling-trail

Very easy and pleasant, but might get a little dull after a while. Had an annoying number of right-angle bends in the middle of fields.

The pictures I saw of (lake) Achensee looked very attractive and I think a route that way is possible.
These might help:

You might find Open Cycle Map http://www.opencyclemap.org/ useful for getting an overview of routes.

Thanks for the answers. I think that the Issarradweg covers most of the route, the guides I've found are mostly in German not suprisingly so maybe I'll have to brush up my language skills.

I found section of the Isar Radweg between Bad Tolz to Munich very rough. Depends what sort of bike you are using and how heavily loaded you are. I wouldn't use it again. But if you enjoy off road rough stuff you'll enjoy it.
It's ok closer to Munich. If I was going there again I would just plan my own route using minor roads along the Isar valley.
The climb from the Inn valley up to Achensee looks hard. I came south so enjoyed the descent :)

The climb out of the Inn valley to Achensee is hard, there are 2 ways. 1 There is a road through Jenbach. 2 there is a cyclepath alongside the railway line from Jenbach I dont what the surface is but I suspect gravel as I saw MTB`s using it.There is a ban on cyclists using the main road. There was a post last year about Achensee and Bad Tolz. From Achenkirch it is best use the road as the cyclepath (Via Bavarica Tyrolensis) goes through the woods. At the junction with the main road(307)again use the road as CP goes south of the Sylvensteinsee. Follow the Isar Radweg from the Sylvensteinsee to Bad Tolz, at Lengries there is a cyclepath along side the river to Bad Tolz. As other posts have said dont follow the river from Bad Tolz best route is to go north through the vilages, such as Dietramszall, Thanning, Grossdingharting.you can join the cyclepath along river at Schaftlarn or Grunwald.
