Front racks

Post by molzor »

Hello I am looking for a front rack for my bike, trying to get some of the weight off the rear and spread it better.
however, i do not have any mounts on my forks. does anyone know of a rack i might be able to fit using the wheel axle or something?

How about this - it's a bit cheaper:

I got this for my touring bike and it's great. I do have front fork mounts but they supply brackets if you don't.

You could look at the thule pack and pedal. Or old man moutain racks. If you can find a deal they will be worth a look

Tubus Smarti might work, only a bit higher than a low rider, fits on the brake bosses. I've been trying to fit one on mine for a while but haven't got round to it yet, as the holes in the rack are slightly too narrow for my bosses. So I can't vouch for it, but it looks like a nice idea.

Look on the Tubus website - you'll find several mounting options for fitting racks to bikes with no fixing points.
The theory is simple: a) cycling is inherently fun, and b) the less weight you carry, the more fun it is.

It may be in your best interests to keep all the weight on the back rack until you can spend serious money on a good front rack. As was pointed out to me earlier this year after I bought and rated highly a cheap rack on Amazon, the bracing plate across the top prevents any of the common modern fixing mechanisms on panniers engaging properly and safely. Do you really want your panniers to jump off the rack at speed and potentially fall under your wheels? The thin tubing on these racks allows the whole thing to flop about under weight even with a wheel hoop. You'll not want the rack bending into your front wheel at even slow speeds.
These at the mid section of the forks http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... b0s79p2031 and these at the bottom http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... b0s79p2032 should cover most racks on the market safely.

I adapted an old steel rear-rack by adding a short metal bar each side as a spacer to reach the mudguard fixings on the front forks and hold the rack horizontal. This will take a set of small throw-over panniers or simply a roll of gear inside a plastic rubble-sack strapped on with bungees, although obviously it's better to keep heavier loads lower.
