I use a steel gear protector, which is permantly fitted.
These were popular in early days of mountain bikes. They take any knocks or the strain if the bike is lain on it. Plenty of times after travel, I have to bend it a bit, proving it has done its job, taking the strain instead of the gear hanger.
PS in my Southend post above, I forgot to say that I also removed the pedals. Sometimes when sending my bike unaccompanied eg by train, I remove the pedals to stop anyone riding it.

An option with pedals is to screw them into the backs of the cranks, then wrap them in padding so that they won't bash on the frame.
