Registering ride leaders for the CTC insurance.

Post by BMB Club Secretary »

Hi there, I recently signed up with the CTC group insurance as Barnsley Mountain Bikers and have to register the groups leaders.

But I can't for the life of me see anywhere on the site to do this. Am I missing the obvious for the trees on this? I'll be grateful if I can be pointed into the right site page to do this.

Thanks in advance Pete - BMB

AfAIK our club (affiliated to CTC) membership secretary simply sends an email to CTC HQ once a month listing all the ride leaders by name (and CTC No if they are CTC members of any variety).

I've recently checked this for an affiliated club. Nowdays you can send the names of leaders to Julie.Rand@ctc.org.uk she keeps the list.

I am a bit confused.
I am a member of the CTC and I thought therefore have 3rd party insurance when riding ?
However, occasionally I lead rides for a local cycling club, and as such does this negate my 3rd party insurance ?
So as a ride leader, do I have to be' registered' with the CTC to be insured ?
Grateful for any advice on this.

Yes and no.
It makes no difference to you being involved as a rider in something that causes there to be a claim against you.
But if the club you are leading a ride for had a claim made against it, for something someone felt you should or shouldn't have done, you are not covered.
Here is the cover provided for ride leaders, it's the same for member groups and affiliated clubs, the club you are leading for may already have some policy that covers itself, I'd check it also covered you.

Thanks PH,
that is worrying.
as far as I know, my local club is affiliated to the CTC.
So do they have to register the ride leaders ?
it is a club that has many ride sections during the week with many leaders.

Yes they should register them, it's simply a matter of the club sending an email to the address above. As a ride leader you should also know who is and isn't a member of the club and you should of course be a member yourself.
Please don't get this out of proportion, the incidence of claims is very rare, that's why the insurance is so cheap. There is a whole load of information for ride leaders, that came together for the recent workshops, IMO worth reading.

I know it won't do any harm, but for the purpose of this insurance someone's CTC status is an irrelevance.

Correct - but it does give our membership secretary confirmation that people are members of the club within the correct classification (they are : CTC Full, CTC Affiliate, Own insurance) - especially if members change classification between renewals (as I have 8) )

No it isn't. The insurance for a ride leader of an affiliated club does not extend beyond the UK. So if you lead a ride abroad and want to be insured as a leader then the club needs to be a Member group.
The FNRttC is an affiliated group. So when its members go on a tour outside the UK it does not have a leader. Its riders book their own transport, accommodation and buy their own food. They tend to, but do not always, ride together along a route suggested by one of its riders. The rider who suggests the route is a CTC member and so has third party insurance, as do all of them on the tour.
HTH.
