Zefal No Spring Bell
Hi,
Just arrived today, was searching for a bell that did not fall apart ? when the spring rusted that does not cost the earth £2.99 posted.
Yet to road test but will be on the bike this week, a good ping too.
Comments invited from anyone who has one already.

Hi,
That's what happens with the 99p ones.
I have to frequent cycle paths with dog walkers so it will get a good try out.

Probably OK when temperature > 5°C, but I've had supposedly-springy plastic doodahs stiffen and fracture when it was colder.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

Re: Zefal No Spring Bell
Hi,
Left it in the freezer for an hour, no problem with ping.
Fitted it and ran into problems with clearance with the brake/gear lever on MTB set up, got it on after a bit of fiddle.
Time will tell through the winter..........

Re: Zefal No Spring Bell
I've had one of those shown in the OP for years. Works fine for what it is: no-nonsense ping bell. Loud enough in most shared-use path circumstances. Easy to remove and swap between bikes, etc. Of course it only pings once for every time you ping it...so you have to ping several times for a tring-tring sort of noise - by which time you may want to have your hands working the brakes. But all the tring-tring bells that I've had in the that price bracket have soon broken.

Re: Zefal No Spring Bell
Hi,
I have another I got from SJS (before I tried it) £1.47 zefal plastic spring, I might try that and see what happens.................if it goes same way then send SJS an email or something.
Could do with some sort of standard or something, its a bum when if stops mid ride, I ended up coughing loudly....blimey they heard me from about 50 yrds
I reckon I ping the bell about 50+ times each trip, lots of dogs walkers etc.

I don't have a bell on my bike, yet, though I have got a Knog Oi bell on it's way. In the meantime my rear wheel rotates around a Hope rear hub which alerts peds long before I'm close enough to speak to them, especially if I pedal backwards on the approach.

Hi,
OK, I don't really want to digress into a bell no bell discussion, unless I missed your smilie ant end of your post.
You can start another post if you like.
Forgive me if I misread what you said?

How loud are the brass bells pictured. Any recommendations for a really loud bell. Not an air horn BTW.

Re: Zefal No Spring Bell
The trouble with most bells is that the centre rivet doesn't hold the cloche on firmly, so the damn things rattle all the time.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

I've got one of these type on my commuter and it's reasonably loud but it also 'dings' for a lot longer than a pinger. I've managed to set it up with the workings quite loose. I want it to rattle and more often than not people hear me coming and I don't need to ring it.

Portland Designworks Alexander Graham Bell - people 30+ yards away turn round when they hear it on my local towpaths. Except those listening to their ipods of course!
