For those who don't know, the Maptrap (designed by the legendary CJ of this parish) is a bit like a GPS except that it requires no batteries and never beeps at you or tells you to make a U-turn. You attach it to your bike's handlebars then "download" maps and routes to it using printed-paper technology. It's compatible with Ordnance Survey and all other well-known brands of map. There's a built-in zoom function: simply move your face closer to the map. It's not entirely waterproof but this is easily rectified by putting your maps in a specialist waterproof covering (or "plastic bag"). Rather than scrolling, the display tracks your location on the map through an innovative process called "refolding" where you take the map out, fold it over and put it back in. Experienced Maptrap users soon get adept at "refolding" and can even perform it while on the move (don't try this at home).
Seriously, if you want a paper map/routesheet holder that's neat, compact and robust, this is the one to have. I've tried a few others but none of them matches up to the Maptrap. There are two variants: one has a Rixen-Kaul Klickfix mount which allows you to remove the map holder in seconds but leaves an ugly and obtrusive bracket permanently on the bars. The version on sale at Polaris is the older (and in my opinion) better style, where the holder is strapped to the bars with reusable zip ties. That does mean allowing a bit of space on the bars, of course - but hey, you don't need that Garmin on there now...
