Maxxis DTH BMX Race tyre 38-406

Postby UpWrong » 17 Mar 2019, 2:47pm

Got one of these size in 38-406 size on an 18mm rim on the front of my Nazca. Measured the width as 38mm. Think it's a 120 tpi folding tyre with small block tread formed by concentric rings of the letter "M" - M for Maxxis I guess, neat eh? The overall effect is to form a herringbone pattern. No puncture protection belt. Sidewall says to inflate to minimum 85psi. I inflated it to 50psi and did a couple of hours riding on usual frost damaged back roads. Verdict: comfortable and handling was fine at 50psi. I intend to stick with it.

They look like they might be a handy alternative to the Kojaks (see my other thread!).

I've had a look online, most retailers seem to be selling them in imperial sizes, is your 38-406 a 20x1.5" by any chance? Could you point us to where you bought them from ?

I see the 26" size comes in amberwall, pity they don't do a 20" in that style as it would match my Pasela on the rear!

Thanks

Yes the 20"x1.5" is the ERTO 38-406 size. I bought mine from Fawkes Cycles.

Went for another ride today. This time with the Maxxis at 60psi and the 32mm Pasela PT on the rear at 80psi. Still comfortable and the bike felt livelier. This is probably the first time I have attacked one of my routes on the Nazca rather than just learning how to ride the bike. It felt good. I've got the weight down to 18Kg, below 40lbs, so it's not quite the lump it was.

Actually they do claim some puncture protection of some kind but I couldn't feel anything. Had a few rides now and so far I have not found anything embedded in the tread.

I continue to be impressed by the tyre but have ordered the 49-406 version (20x1.95) to see if it improves comfort and confidence on my recumbent when riding on roads in poor condition. Will be using a different, heavier wheel with a wider rim and different inner tube. I guess there will be more rolling resistance for the same mm tyre drop yet alone resulting from an increased mm tyre drop but this might be offset by a rounder contact patch and larger diameter.

Have reverted to the 38-406 tyre on the narrower rim. There was quite a lot of lateral resistance with the 49-406 and it made for a heavier package.
