How to keep water out of waterproof socks.
I wrote this up some years ago and my letter was published in the CTC magazine.
Get a medium sized pair of kitchen gloves in your supermarket.
Cut off below fingers.
Pull the remaining cuff onto your leg.
Put on sock.
Pull cuff down over mouth of sock.
This acts like a drysuit. I got the idea from that.
If you put a smear of Vaseline on your leg where the cuff makes contact it's even better.
I've tried it a few times. It works ALMOST perfectly on a day's wet cycling.

Alternatively, one could also wear a pair of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9270 and go from ALMOST TO ALWAYS.
And they look a bit better also

No matter how breathable they are, you will still be too hot.

Is this a statement of fact and experience based on your use of these particular trousers or have you gazed into you crystal ball and mistakenly seen me cycling too hot through ireland, England, Belgium and France during the summer wearing these trousers whilst keeping dry and comfortable.

It depends how big you are, how hard you cycle and how difficult the terrain is.
I'm 6 2. I will sweat in anything like that.

Hum - the rubber glove ploy sounds interesting. I came back from a ride today with swollen sock ankles due to the amount of water trapped inside my (knee length) sealskinz. Will just have to experiment on size a bit to avoid getting a tourniquet effect from the glove clamped around my knee. Be grand if it works, as the Scottish hills can be well wet.

Oh and btw I've got some breeks like that - pretty good, but quite thin and prone to damage I find, and a lot more expensive than a pair of rubber gloves and a pot of vaseline, Doctor.

Would this work for the tops of overshoes? I got some Carradice ones that have a wide top that just lets the rain pour in!

And you'd also be £117 lighter to boot an' all.

I am also a large sweaty 6'2"
I have used the glove tops idea with a pair of northwave celcius MTB boots
As the boots were breathable and waterproof the extra sweatiness of the rubber on the ankles didn't seem to be a problem. Yes I was more moist in the foot but not so much that it was nasty
The only problem with this concept is that for the seal to be good the glove tops have to be so tight that the circulation of blood to the feet is threatened
