Hi, I'm off in a month for my first crack at lejog. for me it's not about speed, I'd like to find a scenic route with plenty of photo opportunities. I've not got a lot of miles in this year so if I can avoid the bigger hills would be my preference. Would you recommend north or south out of Cornwall?
Thanks in advance
Pete
Lejog - north or south out of Cornwall?
Re: Lejog - north or south out of Cornwall?
Hills?
Pretty much of a muchness I reckon.
The north coast has more alternatives than the south coast, and the north coast is away from the bigger towns. Also the north coast is more rugged and photogenic IMHO.
The north coast has the steepest hills too, if you like them!
North:
Take the coast road via Zennor to St Ives and to Hayle.
St Agnes, Port Isaac, Boscastle, Tintagel are great, but Newquay is probably best avoided. Padstow is ok. Cross on the ferry to Rock.
Crackington Haven has some "cracking" hills.
South:
Go south via Porthcurno, Moushole and Newlyn into Penzance.
Marazion and St Michaels Mount.
Perhaps visit The Lizard?
In and out the coves to St Mawes, then Roseland Heritage Coast, and Mevagissey.
Miss out St Austell.
Fowey is nice and you can cross the ferry to get you to Polperro and Looe - both busy with holidaymakers. (Emmets)
Cross the Torpoint Ferry to Plymouth.
On balance, I'd go north every time.
However, the weather this time of year can be very different on the two coasts. One side can be damp and misty, the other sunny and bright.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Mick, exactly what I was after!
In your opinion (or anyone's) would the north or the south route be the best lead into Devon and onwards?
Thanks again.

It depends on if you want to ride over Dartmoor or not.
Take the north route, and you'll need to come south somewhere to get to Tavistock to climb east over the moor. There's only one basic route over for the LEJOGer. Tavistock to Exeter.
Staying north, you'll miss it and go maybe via Holsworthy and Hatherleigh to Crediton and out.
