What's the main reason the WIMPS route - and most others - go through Gloucester instead over the Severn bridge? Intuitively it seem going through Wales might have a bit less traffic and cuts out 10-20 miles?

Fewer hills?

In my 1990s LeJog I went over the Severn Bridge and through Hereford, Ludlow etc. Light traffic but certainly the hills outweighed any 20- mile saving in distance. Nice scenery but I think Gloucester would be faster.

Possibly lured by 1000’ less climbing and comparing these profiles

I’m not too familiar with Wales but i did ride a B road north from Chepstow a few years ago and it wasn’t too pleasant. Admittedly the A49 wasn’t a joy in places either.

interesting. Something to think about. Going solo I'm not getting any drafting bonus so a bit more hills might be worth the extra peace and quiet.

Great book (France En Velo). If you read it you’ll want to do it. It’s on my to-do list - along with LEJOG. :D

Wimps?
Are you less wimpy now for a JOGLE?
Find some good climbs and a challenging route or two.
Just thinking ........... or I was doing when cycling yesterday.

If you came the usual route south, you could follow the Old A38 (B3181) via Cullompton into Exeter, then the B3212 to Moretonhampstead and over Dartmoor to Tavistock. Pork Hill down to Tavy is one of the great descents in UK. I managed 52mph down there once! :D
Dartmoor is a great cycling route and by the time you get down this end, you'll all be fit as fleas so will manage it easily maybe.

From Tavy, it gets a bit more hilly but you can stay off the main roads to make your way along to the "normal" route to LE.

Just a thought.

Hi,
Dartmoor, Morton to Tavistock, definitely a preferred route for scenery second to none.
The climb from Morton on to Dartmoor is very stiff but worth the effort.
Likewise Porkhill (53.5 mph ) Likewise down in To Morton is electric, just be careful on the twists.

Hang on lads. I've just had a great idea......
So I'm actually picking up a geared Surly Ogre on Friday and am thinking of riding coast to coast France, mainly off road, self supported sounds like a plan (obviously if anyone's close enough please feel free to come round and slap me). I only thought of this whilst riding this morning, so no thought has gone into it at all. I'll post up a separate thread on the touring forum, as finding a route might be a good start......

I'm having slight problems identifying the route. Finding VTT routes that exist are proving challenging...but at least I've built a bike ready for the ride..
