The conversation between us went on to my telling how I navigated on my first JOGLE in 1994.
I had a road atlas that I'd cut the relevant pages out and also used a Herringbone System.

I hand drew a straight vertical line of my route per day labeled start to finish on A5 paper in portrait mode. Start was north, and finish south of course because I was doing JOGLE.
Along the line, I drew the junctions to go through with their destinations off at rightangles or at a slant depending on how they looked on the map. I marked the route in miles between each junction and also the road numbers etc.
It was in the days before laminating, so I used plastic sleeves.
They were just the right size to fit in my jersey back pocket.
I still have them somewhere in the loft. I must dig them out and have a look for old time's sake.

Oldmanonabike has kindly taken the time to put together the actual daily recorded routes of one of the riders (Kft) and produced the total ride.
http://www.plotaroute.com/route/647683

Obviously the daily routes had to be devised to take in each days campsite so you may wonder why we went a certain way.
Most campsites are shown by a "wiggle" in the route.

I've a plastic bag that was thought to belong to John (cycleruk) left over from our adventure. It has some locks in, chain, mirror, cycling shoes and one or two other bits and bobs. Any one claiming? Not cycleruk or John B so far! :?:

There's a wiggle in Crediton!

Some of them, took a route that bypassed the town centre, so they had to double back to find the cafe.

That's mine, I hadn't missed it as all my gear was put into a shed at the caravan and I didn't check it before coming home

Good cafe. That's where we met the young lady walking JoGLE. Wonder if she has arrived yet.

One of the important things we quickly learned was to eat enough as I personally was burning 3000+ calories per day.
It was obvious to drink plenty because of the heat but not so obvious as to get the fuel in during the day.
I'm not one for gels but I carry a banana or two and used these for a boost late in the day. The odd Cornish pasty stuffed in the back pocket also made a welcome addition on the road. (I won't mention the cakes, ice creams or lollies) :)

It still can't beat the veggie breakfast in the cafe in Lockerbie, I could hardly cycle after, pity it was quite early in the day....
