Re: Record attempt scheduled

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

hi,
Not sure what time she started this morning but she's already a little bit behind on the schedule.
Yesterday she was right on time.
But she has now 20 miles to cover in an hour to stay on schedule or start skipping some of the rest time.
Yesterday I believe she was stopped at dinnertime for an hour and a quarter.
although she was keeping time.
Early days yet will see how she's doing later on in the day.
From her blog she says she's not particularly very good at nutrition on the second day.
also to combat sleep deprivation ideally you need to close your eyes and lay still during the ride when you are resting.
That's the only way I ever found a way of not falling asleep on the bike, to clarify this what happens is one moment you are In one part of the road the next blink of an eye you are somewhere else!
The legs are still turning the wheels are still turning but there is no memory of the gap in between which could be several seconds.
Maybe this and this is not what she means with sleep deprivation?
She probably means not getting enough sleep?
Two different things of course.
The latter is more habitual than anything else.

Hi,
If I've got this right she's going to arrive at the next checkpoint end of first leg that is, an hour after she is due to start the second leg!
I wish her good luck but it's not looking good at the moment.

Hi,
If a motorbikes shadowing her it must be a road?
More likely a cycle path?

Hi,
Yeah just this minute checking up.
she might finish the leg at 1:30 to 2 o'clock Tuesday.
Should just miss the rain as Lancaster doesn't see it till 3 o'clock.
But tomorrow is absolute hell.
Worst luck :(

I never knew the details regards the time and in any case, it's a bloody interesting story and fantastic feat so can repeated as many times as the record holder wants 8)

Re the record attempt, maybe the wind can aid bringing some of that time back but it's already significantly behind, catching up that amount just on the mental aspect is going to be real tough, even for someone as determined as she says she is. When you're pushing the clock back in terms of daylight and more night riding than anticipated this can also have an impact.
Personally I enjoy riding late at night the only downsides these days are the overtly bright lights of oncoming motors.

Just catching up with this amazing attempt Maria

To me, it seems a shame they wouldn't allow her the 10 days for a first. I know we're a bit obsessed with records on here but I get the feeling this more of a personal journey and raising some money for good causes.

Started this morning a little after 7:30. SE gusts of 40mph down there but it’s Easterly just now in Scotland.
Lost 10 minutes straight away because, as I feared, her route. Set off from premier Inn and back along Caton Road to her route over the Aqueduct. 10 minutes later she’s passing the Premier Inn and heading for Morecambe Gateway Road. She must have thought the aqueduct, rightly, unsuitable or that side of the cycle route is closed. It was closed, I think, a couple of months ago. @TangledMetal will know.

Gone off route before Milnthorpe and has carried on along the A6. It’s OK along that bit but when she does the climb out of Levens and hits the A591....
Scrap that she took a left to meet the A591 at the bottom of the hill. Stopped now and probably consulting a map? From this point there is no way out of it other than the A591 which is treble horrible and a long way into Kendal. If she’d took her planned right turn she’d have been in Kendal by now.
I’m feeling a lot of sympathy for her just now.

Edit:
Dora the support vehicle is sitting in Kendal on route. No idea where Marcia phone is and Marcia has now been stopped 20 mins.

Hi,
Question, how is she navigating she must have satnav?
There is not the support crew advising her on the route before she starts out?

We can only guess on that NA. I would have thought though you have to have a watertight route and stick to it. Making up diversions while you are on the road and tired can not be good. I’ve witnessed two examples of that this morning.
The motorbike which I assume to be Marcia phone was there early on but now disappeared. If the cycle route over the aqueduct was closed then it was something Dora support could have spotted but there again a late finish last night and I think can be excused.

The storm is moving northwards at more or less the same rate as she was planning to. She's been stopped in Kendal for a while - possibly hoping the rain clears Shap Fell?
I wouldn't fancy going over there in these conditions, it is truly horrible. If she gets through it, she'll pick up one hell of a headwind tomorrow in Scotland as the storm passes off into the North Sea and the winds change. The forecast for most of the rest of this week is pretty dire.

I take my hat off to anybody riding in these conditions but it's now edging towards the barmy. Also, in terms of any sort of record, where's the verification?

Phew!
She got out of Kendal. Off route twice but once would be because she’d routed the wrong way up a one way road. Got back on route then went the wrong way Arrghh. Hadn’t gone too far before realising thankfully.
Yes the conditions on top of Shap will be awful but with this wind might say “what hill?”
