The Penny Farthing record set in 1800 and something still hasn't been beaten.

Mark Beaumont is going to have a go at the hour record for a penny farthing. Maybe success at that might lead to longer things.

I could manage that - a little over 3 miles a day.
At the last count:- Focus Variado, Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin, Raleigh 20, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Longstaff trike conversion on a Falcon corsa. :D

This is the bike......I’ve been over Beattock summit a couple times recently.....it’s not the hill that will slow him up but the road surface.....I can only imagine the pain he’s going to receive going over there. Pave would be smoother.

You can track his progress here https://gps.blackblox.si/login/ian
I’ve not seen a schedule posted, so I have a question: if the RRA aren’t notified, and they don’t verify it along the route, if he is faster Is it a record?

If you move the map across to the UK you will find that it is tracking Ian's progress & also shows his planned route. He was past Hayle when I checked just now (approx 7:05am).

I've now worked out that by clicking on Ian, it brings it up.

Of interest I see he has permission to use the main carriageway and take their car over the Forth Road Bridge.
Did Gethin have to use the cycle path Anyone recall?

Been following his since before he even reached Penzance.
He's now approaching the Bodmin Bypass section of the A30.

One thing that puzzles me, is what the info on his status window.
This is the one at this very moment.

I understand his speed, but what does 158m 95% mean?
I've seen the % number go up as well as down, and also the m number likewise.

I'm Guessing the 158m is the elevation. The speed drops as the elevation increases and vice verse.

Edit to add:

The % figure could be his current average speed expressed as a percentage of the overall average speed to achieve his target for the record.

That's a good thought - though he's behind the curve at present.

The m figure isn't elevation.
As he was on the Hayle Bypass, the m figure was 386m - there's no way that there's anywhere in Cornwall at 386m above sea level and certainly not on the Hayle Bypass.

Just checking on the contours as he passes them.
It seems that the m number is indeed elevation, and the Hayle Bypass figure must have been an aberration.

I'll keep checking.

Mind you, he's going at a terrific pace. 3hrs in and he's already on Bodmin Moor.

He seems to have either stopped, or his black box has stopped ........ or both.
No update for 7mins.

There's roadworks there where he is. No layby.
