Janand Simon's LEJoG
Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
72 miles and 5200 feet of climbing. Went well. Didn't enjoy the A39, did like the route through St Minver and the B road to Delabole. Traffic busy, but controllable on the winding road. Not bashing past you at 65 plus.
Very pleased with ourselves, pleased to get in the shower at the end.
Credits to the pastys from the shop in St Newlyn East, and the nice lady in the house next door who offered us water.

Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
Been very lax in keeping up with this.
Day off in Carlisle so will try to catch up.
Day 3 Lifton to Butterleigh.
A tough start along the old A 30.
Around 1500 feet in the first 10 miles.
We climb really slowly, but get there.
Didn't really notice the climb out of Okehampton because was talking to a LeJogger who overtook us.
Rest of the day was good. Robs passage an easy end to the day
Credit to the garden centre at Bow for its food.
And Rob for his passage.

Day 4 Butterleigh to Winscombe.
Good start but deciding to stay on the A38 because it was Sunday morning was a mistake .....it was really busy.
Took a frustrating time to find the canal path but then good out of Taunton.
Rest of the day quiet and steady. Very hot. Ran out of water.

Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
Day 5 Winscombe to Frampton
Strawberry line and quiet roads to Clevedon.
Lovely Avon cycleway to the Avonmouth Bridge.
Literally the high point of the day.
Cycleways round the top of Bristol then quiet lanes and canal to Frampton .

Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
Day 6 Frampton to Kidderminster
Starting to appreciate the canal/river/leisure paths through towns.
Surfaces are a bit variable and signs missing.
Saw almost nothing of Gloucester because we were on the canal towpath.
Worcester and Droitwich fiddly but better than roads and concentrated traffic, and our hotel in Kidderminster was actually just off the canal.
Route 45 nearly all day.

Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
Day 7 Kidderminster to Nantwich
Mainly quiet roads, with short connecting bits of A road.
Hotel kept the bikes indoors for us but upstairs!

Day 8 Nantwich to Eccleston
I was not looking forward to getting through the conurbation between Manchester and Liverpool.
Followed Route 5 through Northwich.
Minor roads up to the outside of Warrington
People in the books and blogs I read had trouble with Warrington.
We went round it on the Sankey Valley trail.
Getting to the start was a bit tricky.
The trail itself is mainly good but not well signed so we lost a lot of time on that.
And there are a lot of truly horrible obstacle gate things to negotiate.
But we missed Warrington entirely.
North of there, what are minor roads on OS maps are often major roads to the locals.
Newton le Willows and Orrell not pleasant.
Eccleston is pleasant and our accommodation brilliant .

Day 9 Eccleston to Kendal
The busy "yellow" road syndrome continued.
If I planned this again I would try to trade off miles for more obscure roads.
Cuerdon Valley took us into Preston.
Busy "B" roads and yellows took us out.
I had hoped to use the A 6 for a bit but it was very busy, so we followed Route 6 until rejoining the A6 to run into Lancaster.
Which was busy. Just as it all stopped outside the city centre we spotted a sign for the canal (not in the original plan) and the towpath took us through and out to join our original route.
The Kellets, Milnthorpe and Natland -mainly Route 6 - got us into Kendal

Day 10 Kendal to Carlisle
Shap went well. The A6 was good. So good we stayed on it to Penrith, by which time I wanted a change.
We have had no long views on the whole of this trip due to the misty weather.
Going up Shap the visibility dropped to 25 yards.
Which meant we couldn't see the hill ahead.
So we plodded up until the road went down, and kept going down, and we realised we had done it.
Great.
Celebrated with an excellent breakfast in the Abbey cafe in Shap village.
After Penrith long straight minor roads which were mainly gently downhill got us to Carlisle where we planned a day off.

Re: Janand Simon's LEJoG
After 10 days and 570 miles, what have I learned?
That the endeavour is fulfilling and enjoyable.
I feel on top of the world walking around Carlisle knowing we have cycled here.
If I plan long routes again I will do more research into numbered cycle routes and possible non road routes through built up areas.
That I am glad I acquired bikes capable of going loaded over roughish paths.
That I get very ratty if I can't find a route I know is there because some (person) hasn't signed it so a dimbo like me can follow it.
That cycling slowly gets you where you want to go.
That my Garmin is very good at indicating that we are off course.
And lots more.
We will be in Scotland tomorrow!

Lunch stop for the Wimps ? (35 miles into day 8 )
You'll never know if you don't try it.

Day 12 Carlisle to Moffat
Easiest day only 45 miles and 1800 feet.
Easy to leave Carlisle from the centre - down to the Eden bridge and turn left just after on to Route 7.
B 7060 fine apart from some nasty potholes.
Took the (forum) recommended diversion west after Lockerbie.
Lovely road. We were passed by a total of 8 vehicles between Lockerbie and Beattock.
Our fastest day: 8.9 mph moving. 8.0 overall.
