Okehampton to Cheddar

Post by Euskadi »

I have a possible route, but would really appreciate some advice/comments. Are there nicer routes? Here's a rough route:
Okehampton B3260, B3215, A3072, A377(Crediton), A3072, A396, B3391(by-pass Halberton), B3440 (Uffculme), A38 (Wellington), B3187, A38, A3027 (Taunton), A3038, A358, A3259, A38 (Bridgwater), A39, B3141, B3139, B3151 (Wedmore), B3139, B3151, A371, B3135 (Cheddar).

Cheers!

At this end, Crediton to Bickleigh on the A3072 is heavy-going. Hard work to say the least. It's a good road, but hilly, but there's the reward of a twisty downhill into Bickleigh, then left along the river into Tiverton.

One route I've yet to try out is the old A30 from Okehampton to Exeter. I've driven it a few times. The road is excellent, and goes through Sticklepath, South Zeal, Whiddon Down, Cheriton Bishop, and Tedburn St Mary, before depositing you into Exeter. You can then follow the old A38, now the B3181 via Cullompton to the actual A38 for Wellington and north.

You not reckon it's worth by-passing good roads so that you can go through Cheddar Gorge though? I've heard it's well worth passing through, and it's not too much of a deviation from the A30.

On my E2E I used the old A30 from Okehampton to Exeter then the B3181/A38 roads that paralells the M5 up towards Taunton

I found this one of the best sections of the tour. Other than Exeter (which wasn't a problem) it was light traffic, good surfaces, and nice undulating scenery. All the through traffic is on the A30/M5

A pretty direct route as well. Would recommend it 100%.

Ok, that advice is good enough for me - A30 and B3181 it is! I've cycled through Cheddar Gorge before and it is pretty spectacular. Thanks Mick and Iain.
